McKenna: Morsy's a Very Good Captain and Very Good Leader - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Kieran McKenna has outlined the qualities which he believes make Sam Morsy such a good captain.

Morsy, 33, was handed the Blues armband by former manager Paul Cook, whose Chesterfield and Wigan sides the Egypt international had previously captained.

McKenna kept the Wolverhampton-born midfielder in the role when he took charge in December 2021 with the pair subsequently leading Town to promotion from League One and the Championship in successive seasons.

"He's certainly been a very good captain and a very good leader for the club and for me over the last couple of seasons,” McKenna said. "I think it is very important.

"Sam is certainly a strong leader, he's the type who drives things day to day in training, both in his actions and in his voice.

"He's a strong leader in that aspect and he's shown those qualities from the first days I arrived here right through until now, which, considering the group has changed a lot - of course, there's some consistency in quite a few players who have been here but also there's been players come and go in that time - he's kept that strong leadership within the group and done it very well over the last couple of seasons.

"I think we've also tried to develop leadership within the rest of the group and I think that's important. I don't want there to be just one leader in the playing group. I want it to be primarily where everyone in the group feels like they have a voice, like they have a say, like they have an input, like they're valued, but also within that to have a leadership group of players who represent the dressing room in different aspects to not just help Sam with those things, but also represent the dressing room.

"Sam is also a part of that wider leadership group and a really good part that guides and helps the dressing room and works alongside the staff to make the environment better day to day.

"I think he's been an excellent captain in both aspects in terms of his driving of the team on the pitch in games and in training and also in contributing with other players in the dressing room to try and improve and develop our environment over the last few years.

"He's done a good job with both and I think we take great pride in the job that he's done and where he is in his career at the moment.”
