McKenna: Fortuna Link a Special Thing - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Kieran McKenna says the link with the fans of Fortuna Düsseldorf, who make their annual pilgrimage to Portman Road on Thursday for the home game against Brighton & Hove Albion, is a special thing and is pleased that they have the reward of seeing the Blues in action in the Premier League for the first time.

The Fortuna Blues have become a familiar sight at January Town matches over the years, having made their first trip over to watch the Blues in 2006 during German football's winter break.

More than 100 made the trip last January, while around 500 attended the friendly the Bundesliga.2 team played at Portman Road in the summer, the visitors running out 2-1 victors.

Town supporters have made reciprocal visits to Germany for Fortuna matches, most recently the Magdeburg game at the end of last season, which ended in a 3-2 victory, with another planned for March.

"It's nice, a special thing,” McKenna said. "And it's nice that we've got fans all over the world.

"They've been a loyal fanbase who aren't just here now that we're in the Premier League, so it's nice for them to have the reward of coming to see us in such a great game.”
