McKenna: Coventry a Stadium With Good Memories - Ipswich Town News

Town manager Kieran McKenna says it will be nice to make the FA Cup fourth round trip to Coventry City next month, the Blues having fond memories of the Coventry Building Society Arena from last season.

The Blues were paired with the Sky Blues in Sunday’s draw after their 3-0 defeat of Bristol Rovers, while the Midlands side, now led by Frank Lampard, had defeated fellow Championship club Sheffield Wednesday 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on home turf the previous day.

The tie, which will be played over the weekend of Saturday 8th February, sees Town return to the scene of celebrations in April when a 2-1 victory all but secured promotion back to the Premier League after a hiatus of 22 years.

Kieffer Moore gave the Blues the lead in the first half, Haji Wright levelled for Coventry after the break but Cameron Burgess netted the winner with 21 minutes left on the clock to set-up memorable post-match celebrations in front of a packed away end, Town requiring just a point from their final home game against already relegated Huddersfield to confirm second spot.

"I think it's a nice draw,” McKenna said. "It's a stadium that we have good memories of, so it would be nice to go back there. Nice pitch, nice stadium, good memories.

"It's going to be a competitive cup tie. They had a fantastic run last year [controversially losing to Manchester United in the semi-finals], but they are not going as well in the league as they probably wanted to be this year, so I'm sure they're going to be desperate to put another really good cup run together.

"It's not on our focus now, but once we get to that week, we'll make sure that we prepare the game really seriously and try and get through to the next round.”

The teams last met in the competition in 2019/20 in the second round when the Midlanders won 2-1 at Portman Road following a 1-1 draw in the first match.
