Wolves were beaten 3-0 at Newcastle United to drop to 18th behind the Blues on goal difference.
Elsewhere, second-bottom Leicester were beaten 2-0 away against Crystal Palace, who are up to 14th, while Everton, one point and one place above Town, were beaten 1-0 at home by Aston Villa.
The Blues are in home action against 11th-placed Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday evening (KO 7.30pm).
