Crowd Trouble Mars Win - Ipswich Town News

Trouble flared after Town's 3-0 victory against Portsmouth on Good Friday. Fans from both clubs were involved in a clash which left the Drum and Monkey badly damaged.

The pub, the traditional haunt of away fans on a day out at Portman Road, was the scene of an incident at around 8pm where a number of Town supporters burst in and attacked the away fans with windows and furniture being smashed. Landlord Dave West, who took over the pub just 10 weeks ago, is expecting the damage to total thousands of pounds.

West said: "Basically Ipswich supporters attacked Portsmouth supporters in suide the pub. They started by throwing bottles at windows from the outside and the fans inside started attacking them back."

Police were called for the incident which Inspector Martin Barnes-Smith said was worse than they would usually expect: "Normally we may have had sporadic little incidents that are quickly calmed but this one went beyond that and became quite violent and there was a lot of damage to the Drum and Monke,y and someone was hurt because of it."

One Ipswich fan was reported to have been taken away in an ambulance covered in blood.

It is the second week running there has been trouble involving Ipswich supporters. At Coventry last weekend a number of fans left the game at half-time with the Blues 2-0 down and were involved in incidents in the city.
