Ipswich Town Women maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a backs-to-the-wall performance away to Southampton at Eastleigh. Despite being under severe pressure for the majority of the match they kept the game scoreless, earning a second successive draw in WSL2.
Southampton had completed the league double over Town last season, having thumped the Blues 4-0 at St Mary's on the opening day last September before securing a 2-1 win at Portman Road in March with a controversial last-gasp goal, which should have been ruled out for offside.
Ipswich made one change to their starting line-up from their opening game of the season and it was a significant one. Club captain Maria Boswell was named as a substitute with Emma Lawton coming in at right-back.
New signing Aimee Palmer wore the armband on her return to the club she had left to join Ipswich this summer. Southampton were unchanged from last week's 3-1 win away to Durham.
Lysianne Proulx kept her place despite being at fault for the goal the Blues conceded last weekend against Nottingham Forest. She vindicated that decision within the first 30 seconds as Southampton made a flying start at the Silverlake Stadium.
Ellie Brazil raced away from Bethan Roe down the Ipswich left and her cross was only half-cleared by Kenzie Weir. Mary Bashford curled the ball back first time towards the top corner but Proulx palmed it away with a flying save. Seconds later, striker Freya Jupp headed narrowly over from a left-wing cross.
Southampton continued to dominate the early play and, in the ninth minute, Amy Goddard sent a free header just wide of Proulx's right-hand post.
Moments later, Ipswich had a shout for a penalty when it appeared that Georgia Timms had her arm grabbed by Goddard on the corner of the area, referee Fabio Roque waved play on.
Bashford might have done better than shoot over with a snapshot in the 18th minute after a ball ricocheted into her path in the penalty area. Proulx then pushed away a dangerous cross shot from Abbie Ferguson as the Saints zipped the ball around at pace.
In the 28th minute, Goddard thought she had scored after she forced the ball home from another right-wing corner. However, the referee adjudged that she had gone in too aggressively and caught Proulx with her trailing foot, ruling the goal out for a foul on the goalkeeper. Jupp and Ferguson then shot narrowly wide as the pressure on the away side mounted.
The game meandered for the remainder of the first half as Ipswich struggled to make any impression going forward. The play was briefly held up in the final minute when the sprinklers in the Southampton half came on unexpectedly.
In the 50th minute, Town lost the influential Jenna Dear when she limped off after an innocuous-looking challenge on halfway. She was replaced by Lucy O'Brien.
The change lifted the Blues, who had their first attempt on goal when Palmer's long free-kick was flicked on by Leah Mitchell and Georgia Hunter had her header smothered by Southampton goalkeeper Grace Moloney.
The dangerous Ferguson then cut inside Lawton to force another save from Proulx with a deflected shot.
Shortly afterwards, Ferguson gave the ball away with a wayward cross field pass and Tegan McGowan shot from long range, easily gathered by Moloney.
Despite their territorial domination, Southampton seemed to increasingly run out of ideas as the match entered its final stages. The effervescent Bashford had Southampton's 23rd and final shot on goal in the 93rd minute after a clever turn on the edge of the Town area but the excellent Weir slid in to deflect it wide of Proulx's post.
After coming up against WSL sides in the searing heat of Andalusia during their pre-season training camp, the Blues maintained their discipline and shape when other teams have may have tired, opening up spaces to exploit.
Having now faced the same two sides which defeated them in their opening two games of last season, Ipswich have this time emerged with two creditable points, a sign of their further progression under David Wright after he oversaw their escape from relegation during the second half of 2025/26.
Town's testing start to this campaign continues next Sunday with a trip to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City, the team relegated from WSL1 last season.
