Finidi Pay-Off Close - Ipswich Town News

Misfit former Nigerian international Finidi George is set to leave Portman Road over the summer. A settlement of his contract has long been expected and his agent Winny Haatrecht today confirmed that this is almost complete.

Haatrecht says that Town are keen to get matters settled: "The club want to buy out his contract and we are close to agreement. We are still working on some details.

"I am not going to talk money. It is a private matter between Finidi and the club, but he had a good contract.

"It was too much to ask for everything he was owed, but they made him an offer and Finidi has accepted."

The former Real Betis and Real Mallorca man joined Town for £3.1 million in the summer of 2001 and is understood to be on a contract worth £20,000-a-week. He has two years left on his deal and it is likely that he could pocket as much as £1 million from the settlement.

Finidi failed to make any impression at Town this season, partly due to a persistent hip injury and was offered a free transfer. Despite links with Turkish side Fenerbahce and Spanish club Almería no concrete offer materialised, and a settlement of his contract was almost agreed prior to Town entering administration in February.

After joining Town the Port Harcourt-born player impressed on his home debut against Derby County when he scored two goals in a 3-1 win. However, his performances when downhill after that and he rarely showed the same level of form. In total he scored eight goals in 46 appearances for the Blues.

Haatrecht says his player is disappointed with the way things have gone at Town: "Finidi is very sorry things did not work out at Ipswich and
that he could not help more to get them back in the Premiership."

He says Finidi now wants to find a club in Spain where his girlfriend recently returned to have their first baby and where he is currently on holiday.
