Magpies in Dale Tribute - Ipswich Town News

Sir Bobby Robson's Newcastle United have been confirmed as Town's opponents in a testimonial for former assistant manager Dale Roberts to be played in pre-season 2004/05. Roberts, who was in Robson's Town squad in the 70s, lost his battle with cancer in February 2003.

No date has yet been set for the game which is likely to see Darren Ambrose, Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble make returns to Portman Road, along with Robson and Charlie Woods, now on Robson's staff at St James' Park.

Former Town boss George Burley, a great friend of Dale's, has been involved in the organisation of the match and other events, including a sporting dinner at the County Hotel in Copdock on Monday, April 26th, where Peter Reid will be amongst the speakers.

A golf day has also been arranged for Wednesday, May 19th.

Town's pre-season programme is as yet still largely unknown, although it is known that the Blues will face Ford United, who by then will have changed their name to Redbridge FC, at their Oakside Stadium in Barkingside on July 24th.

One of the two friendlies arranged with Lazio as part of the Matteo Sereni deal is set for the summer, while a visit to Cork City has also been pencilled in.
