Town After Edwards? - Ipswich Town News

Sources in Wrexham are linking Town with a summer move for the Robins' 25-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international Carlos Edwards. The right winger, described as skilful and fast, is highly regarded and has previously been mentioned in connection with a number of Division One and Premiership clubs.

Edwards joined Wrexham from Defence Force, the Trinidad and Tobago army side, for £125,000 in June 2000. Since then he has become a hugely popular figure at Denis Smith's club and has scored 24 goals in 159 appearances for the Welsh side.

A host of clubs have been linked with him over the last year or so, including Leeds, Norwich, Sunderland, Wigan and Dundee. Preston came closest to securing his signature in March, but the two clubs could not agree a deal.

Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Edwards made his international debut in the 1999 Copa Caribe Cup tournament and now has more than 30 caps.

The winger's wife, Teressa, is a singer, who has performed in front of the crowd prior to games at the Racecourse Ground.

Edwards was named in the PFA's Third Division Team of the Year for 2002/2003 season and in their Second Division Team of the Year for 2003/2004. He was the Wrexham supporters' Player of the Year in 2002/03.

With one year remaining on his Wrexham contract, the Blues would have to pay the Welsh club a fee for his services.

Meanwhile, tabloid newspapers are linking Town with 23-year-old Crewe full-back David Wright.

The right-sided defender has another year left on his Gresty Road deal but will be allowed to leave if an acceptable offer comes in, manager Dario Gradi saying last week: "David has wanted to move on for a while and we are happy for him to do that if a suitable club came in for him during the summer.

"David wants to have a go at a bigger club and we would probably let him do that. There have been enquiries about him but no one has been prepared to say ‘yes, we will take him'. We will have to see what the summer holds for him.

"I'm sure he will be disappointed if a bigger club didn't come in for him but he has proved that he is good enough to play in the Premiership. David looks like being the next in a line of players to move on."

Despite his relative youth, Wright has made 241 senior appearances for the Railwaymen since coming through their famous youth ranks, scoring three goals.
