Mogga Joins Hibs - Ipswich Town News

Town coach Tony Mowbray has been appointed manager of Scottish Premier League side Hibernian. Mowbray had been offered another year with the Blues but had always made it clear that he wanted a management position of his own.

Mowbray says he intends to play a similar style of football to Town's at Easter Road: "I am well aware from my time in Scotland of the stature of this club and its tradition for entertaining and attacking football.

"I would like to let the supporters know that my philosophy is all about fast-flowing, passing football with a cutting edge.

"That is what I will be working to instil here at Hibernian, and that is what I am determined our supporters will see. They want to win and they want to be entertained. It is our job to give them that."

Hibernian chairman Ken Lewandowski welcomed the former Celtic man to the club: "We are sure this appointment will be a happy and successful one both for Tony and for the club. Everyone we have spoken to about Tony has given us glowing references on his abilities as a coach, about his philosophy on football, and about his character and integrity.

"He has five years of coaching experience at a major English club some of that time in the Premiership and in a UEFA Cup campaign. He has a commitment to the development of young players, and helped bring through many talented players at Ipswich.

"As a player he spent his career at three big clubs and competed at a high level with distinction, captaining those clubs. He has impressed us with his determination to succeed at Hibernian, with his commitment to improving standards on and off the pitch for our footballers."

Mowbray made 152 appearances for Town as a player, becoming a player-coach in 1999/00. He retired in the summer of 2000 having led Town to the Premiership - scoring in the play-off final at Wembley - but continued to coach and even took over as caretaker manager between the reigns of George Burley and Joe Royle.

It has long been known that the man known as Mogga wanted to become a manager and he had been linked with vacancies at Hartlepool and Blackpool amongst others.
