1978 Law Aids Town - Ipswich Town News
As reported earlier this month, Gert Verheyen desperately wants to join Ipswich, and it seems he is threatening to use a law created in 1978 to get his way. While the finer details of the law are not yet known, it seems that this effectively gives him a get-out clause which would mean that Ipswich would only have to pay compensation to the Belgian Club, to the tune of £100,000 which amounts to Gert's wages for the 4 years remaining on his contract! No wonder the international, who scored for his country at the weekend, is keen to join the Club. Initial estimates of Gert tripling his wages seem way off the mark.
Should the player come to Ipswich for the reported £2million offer, this will leave egg on the faces of the board members of Brugge, after insisting that they value the player at £5million, and will only let him go for that amount. It seems they are in a no-win situation, and will be forced to selling their top asset. They will not want the matter to go to court.
