Finidi: Bad Gamble - Ipswich Town News

Former Town midfielder Finidi George has described his 2001 move to Town as a "bad gamble". The Nigerian left Portman Road last summer after settling his contract with the club.

George told a Nigerian newspaper: "My switch to England in order to save my dwindling career was a bad gamble. Though I did not regret the move, I accept it as one of the ups and down in my career."

The ex-Ajax player rejoined former club Real Mallorca in January on a play-to-be-paid deal and says it took him a while to get back to full match fitness: "For six months I was match rusty and it is difficult for any club to sign a player that has stayed out of action for such a long time.

"But I have to accept whatever because I'm almost at the end of my career. I have a couple of years to play."

The Nigerian didn't entirely lose out by moving to Town - he's still receiving cash from the Blues, as agreed in last summer's contract settlement.

George was set to receive £1 million over 18 months, half the value of the remaining two years of his Portman Road deal.
