Ferguson Wins Award - Ipswich Town News

Town groundsman Alan Ferguson has picked up the Nationwide Groundsman of the Year award for 2003/04. It's the Scot's fourth honour in his time with the Blues.

Ferguson was presented with the trophy by Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the PFA at Manchester City's Eastlands stadium.

The victorious groundsman told the club site: "Last season Portman Road was the best I have had it in my time here, certainly over the whole season. I'd have been disappointed if we hadn't won.

"From the England v Croatia game last August to the Elton John concert last month, the pitch has been in phenomenal shape.

"We've only missed the elite shortlist three times in eight years, so that demonstrates a remarkable consistency from the team. I'm the lucky guy that goes up to get the prize, but it really is a testament to a true team effort. Our senior groundsman, David Driver, has been with us for about 16 years, for example.

"For Ipswich to be winning these awards on a regular basis, when you think that we are up against bigger clubs with bigger budgets, is a real feather in the club's cap."

Chairman David Sheepshanks commented: "I am absolutely delighted for Alan and all of our groundstaff team.

"They fully deserve this accolade as Alan continues to set new standards in the maintenance of the highest quality natural grass pitches to be found anywhere in professional football.

"This year I hope it will provide our players with an added advantage in our quest for promotion."
