Joe Pleased With Win - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Joe Royle was particularly pleased with his side's attacking guile after the 5-1 destruction of Oxford at the Kassam Stadium. Strikers Darren Bent and Pablo Couñago both scored with Tommy Miller (2) and Jim Magilton also netting.

Royle singled out Bent for praise: "We had goals and we had movement from our strikers. All three front runners were terrific and it worked for us.

"We have all been urging Darren to take players on and use his pace, and against Oxford he did it.

"He is a big fan of Thierry Henry and I have said to him 'why not do what he does and use your pace instead of coming back?' and he did it.

"The big test will be against quicker players and he still needs to do the right things.

"Darren has vast potential and there is still a lot to come from him.

"If Darren plays like that every week and with that attitude he will be very difficult to stop."

Less impressive to Royle was allowing the home side to score early on: "It was a poor goal to concede and the two central defenders were a bit sleepy and got caught out on it, but they know that. Perhaps if Kevin Horlock had been playing in front of them it would not have happened."

After the game, Oxford boss Graham Rix tipped Town for a decent season: "Ipswich are a good side. They have got lots of quality, pace and I was very impressed by them, and I expect them to do well this year."

Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis returned to the side after missing the game at Aalborg, however, Fabian Wilnis was unable to take his place at right-back due to a back problem, Drissa Diallo taking over.

Midfielder Kevin Horlock was not involved due to bruised ribs.

Georges Santos, targeted by QPR and Burnley, was on the bench and is expected to be in the reserves side which travels to Barnet this evening (KO 7.45pm).
