Sunderland Want Davis - Ipswich Town News
Sunderland have made an enquiry regarding keeper Kelvin Davis. The 28-year-old former Wimbledon and Luton man has a year left on his Town contract.
Boss Joe Royle told the club site that Mick McCarthy had been in touch: "We've had an enquiry about Kelvin and I can confirm that there is serious interest in him from Sunderland."
Davis joined the Blues from Wimbledon on a free transfer in the summer of 2003. However, that deal included a clause which would see the club now known as the MK Dons receive 50% of any future transfer. Had the Blues won promotion to the Premiership, a payment to the Dons would also have been due.
Davis was recently named the top keeper in the Championship by his peers and is likely to command a seven-figure fee.
If Davis leaves, which seems likely given promoted Sunderland's ability to pay a fee and offer a larger wage, boss Joe Royle will have to decide whether to promote Lewis Price to the position of first choice keeper or bring in a more experienced glovesman.
Price, 20, has already been called into the senior Wales squad but may be considered too young to be the club's main keeper, particularly with transfer windows applying to the Football League next season and 18-year-old Shane Supple potentially his deputy.
Sunderland are also in talks with out-of-contract Town midfielder Tommy Miller, while Darren Bent has also been linked to the Black Cats. However, Charlton appear to be favourites for the England U21 international's signature. A report linking Shefki Kuqi with Mick McCarthy's club appears to be purely speculation.
