Holiday Hell for Osborne - Ipswich Town News
FA Cup final goalscorer Roger Osborne was amongst thousands of holidaymakers evacuated when the Mexican resort of Cancun was battered by Hurricane Wilma. Osborne, now safely back at home in Rushmere, was on a two-week break with wife Margaret, his brother David and his wife Pat.
Osborne said: "We were moved from our hotel last Thursday [October 20th] which was right on the beach front. Everyone along a 20-mile stretch on the beach was moved inland for their own safety.
"We were right in the eye of the storm when it struck and it was horrendous."
Initially they were taken to a cinema multiplex but after it started to show signs of collapse they were moved to a multi-storey car park. With many of the evacuees suffering from diarrhoea and sickness, they were subsequently taken on to a bullring.
As the hurricane passed, the holidaymakers eventually returned to their hotels to collect their belongings before flying home.
