Joe Delighted! - Ipswich Town News

Town boss Joe Royle was delighted with his side's 2-1 derby victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road. The Blues manager felt his side thoroughly deserved their win.

Royle said: "I thought we were terrific today but I was getting a bit worried towards the end because I thought we might not get what we deserved.

"When two blatant penalties aren't given, you tend to fear it might not be your day, but fortunately justice was done.

"I don't think even the most fervent Norwich supporter would deny we deserved to win.

"We passed it around very well, created lots of chances and should have been out of sight by the time we finally got our winner. I thought everyone did well and, although young Owen Garvan would be my man of the match, I thought the senior players did an excellent job as well.

"This win has taken us into the top half of the table, which is very pleasing and we need to push on between now and the end of the season."

Despite the winning goal being credited as a Gary Doherty own goal, Danny Haynes is convinced that it should be his: "I'm claiming it. I definitely got a touch on the ball when it came back from Alan's header and it should be my goal."

Norwich manager Nigel Worthington faced fan protests after the match and conceded that terrace dissent is inevitable given his side's poor performances this season: "I can understand their frustration - it's part of football. It takes strong people, strong minds to come through and I will stand tall. I believe in what we are trying to do here.

"The players have to transfer what they do on the training ground onto the pitch, it's as simple as that.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that's what the game is all about. Do I like losing? No I don't. Do supporters like it? No, they don't.

"Everyone has a goal in life and I know what mine is - it's to win games of football for Norwich and to be here for a long time."

Worthington felt Town merited the win despite the freakish nature of the goals: "I suppose there was an element of good fortune about both their goals - and there was certainly a handball in the winner, but I'm not going to make a big issue about that.

"There's no doubt Ipswich deserved all three points on the day. Had it stayed at 1-1 I would have been absolutely delighted with a point because we just didn't play as well as we could. It was very disappointing and we all had a little chat about it afterwards. Hopefully, I'll get a positive response."
