Call to Cancel Friendly - Ipswich Town News

The Ipswich Town Independent Supporters Trust have called on Town to abandon plans to play a pre-season friendly against the MK Dons this summer. The game has been set for Wednesday, July 12th at the National Hockey Stadium.

MK Dons continue to be a controversial issue and fan pressure has previously caused the cancellation of planned friendlies against Luton, Spurs and Charlton.

Tim Edwards from Ipswich Town Ist told TWTD: "The announcement that Town are to play a pre-season friendly against the MK Dons has been greeted with dismay by Ipswich Town Ist.

"Football clubs are community assets, and Ipswich Town is absolutely a part of the community of Ipswich and Suffolk, so we should not be seen as endorsing a voluntary match against a club formed after Wimbledon FC's fans had their club stolen from them.

"Football fans were united in condemning the franchising of Wimbledon to Milton Keynes, and the club's fans refused to follow the move, preferring instead to start again as AFC Wimbledon, at the foot of the pyramid.

"AFC Wimbledon has been adopted by football fans throughout the country as an emblem of the importance of football in a community.

"MK Dons is a pariah club, who have struggled to find competition for friendlies in the past. Fan power has previously caused the postponement of MK Dons' pre-season matches, and Ipswich Town Ist calls on ITFC to cancel this fixture immediately."
