Who Are You? Where Are You?
Written by Pessimist on Tuesday, 10th May 2022 14:10

Having supported Ipswich Town for more than half a decade, my love affair with this wonderful club remains undiminished.

On the contrary, with owners, a new gaffer at the helm and some amazing support both at home and away, it has further reignited my enthusiasm for seeing more of the Blues in action.

And this is perhaps where you come in. I live here in the Netherlands and have done for more than 30 years. This means, I don't get to see as many games as I would like, but I do know from a previous blog I posted, that I am not the only Town supporter over here!

So, if you live in the Netherlands like me, and want to visit Portman Road more often in the future, can you give me some feedback, please.

Who are you and where are you located would be a good start! This is an exciting time to be following the Blues, so for people who get to Suffolk more often than a couple of times per season, maybe you can advise me as to the best way of doing it. A season ticket is probably out of the question, but I would like to see Ipswich Town more often.

Thanks in advance for your help, and I am firmly convinced that next season should see us, not only climb the table but make it to the Championship - either automatically or through the play-offs. Come on you Blues!

You might miss out here through not having included Netherlands in your title

best wishes

Good Point Monty. I was fearful of that so I might have to reblog later.

Good luck in your mission. I thought this blog would be about where supporters live and why/when they became attached to Town. My ex-brother in law used to live in Utrecht and he combined visits to Portman Road with visits to famiy and research for what passed as a job - writing obscure tomes on English Lit. Mind you his dad was a director of Crystal Palace and he was a member of both Lords and Surrey, so a useful bloke to know. I’m intrigued you’re enthused by what Town have become - essentially a franchise completely at odds with what the club was when you first started following it from afar.

Interesting observations ElephantintheRoom. I am also intrigued to hear where other Town fans live, but my primary concern is about where Town supporters live in the Netherlands, in the hope we could meet up in a bar somewhere here - or better still go together to Portman Road! I admit, a lot has changed since I first started supporting the Blues, but in the modern game, you have to adapt or die, and that is why Ipswich is what it is today.

I have supported Ipswich for more than half a century, and NOT half a decade, as the opening paragraph incorrectly suggests!

Amazingly, nobody picked up on it, but I would be grateful if the editing team revisited it and perhaps changed the title to : Where Do Town Fans Live in The Netherlands?

I live in Cyprus. Until I retired and moved here three years ago, was a season ticket holder for many years. I watch the blues play live on town's website, buying a video pass on Ifollow.
Return to the UK once a year to visit family who still live in Ipswich and watched town play Burton Albion and Cheltenham at home

Sounds like me Paphos. I watch them on ifollow and get to see them play a couple of times a season. Last time it was Sheffield Wednesday in the 1-1 draw at Portman Road, and a fabulous Tuesday night encounter with Doncaster Rovers, in the rain which ended 6-0!

Utrecht based here, for about 7 years now, although I was in Greece and Spain before that. I only get home once or twice a year so my visits to PR are extremely sporadic. I catch a game with my Dad if I'm back in season time, mostly August or September. Been a fan since a few years before our play-off triumph, so thankfully seen some of the good times!

I was a NL based Town fan for 8 years from 1998-2006, living in Gouda and then Wassenaar.....would often jump on the HVH-Harwich ferry for home games (And back the same evening !) or Easyjet into Luton. I met another Town fan online and we began meeting up at O'Donnells in Amsterdam if Ipswich were live on tv. We then began travelling to games together, including standing next to each other at the playoff final at Wembley in 2000 and going to Helsingborg, Milan and Luxembourg in the early 2000's, not to mention plenty of trips on that ferry ! He became a lifelong friend and even gave a speech at my wedding !! He is still in NL most of the time in Amsterdam, I am now in California). :)

Wow, ITFC Singapore, that is quite a story! I know O'Donnells pretty well - it is by the Albert Kujp market. I have never done the ferry trip to Blighty, but it seems doable, and we went to Luxembourg to watch the Blues too when Marcus Stewart scored the only goal!

Thanks for that mate. It was a very interesting read.

Initially I opened the message because of the "more than half a decade" comment which I thought was a bit strange. Glad to see it's half a century!! My first live match as a boy was 1967 (v Portsmouth: Colin Viljoen made his debut aged 16 and scored a hat-trick) so we're both half centenarians. And both now far away from Ipswich. PS the best way for us overseas fans to watch games is iFollow... it's really good despite a long haired moron trying to sell pizza every five minutes before kickoff (I detest this ape: I'll never buy Papa Johns🤣). And great to hear Mick Mills most weeks!!

Phuket Pete. My wife is from Thailand, and although I have been visiting the Land of Smiles since 1993 I have never been south. Korat is where her family is from and she was a nurse in a military hospital there until I married her in 2003. She has lived with me here in the Netherlands ever since and has visited Portman Road with a few times.

I know Colin Vijoen quite well. I worked behind the bar at David Lloyds Tennis Club and he was a regular client and offered me a job managing his pub called the Nine Styles in Uxbridge but nothing came of it. He was a great player in his day, and very underrated.

I am now retired here in Holland but it is a bit nearer than Thailand when it comes to taking the odd game in. I have been a subscriber to ifollow since its inception and last season I saw Ipswich beat Doncaster United 6-0 at Portman Road along with the 1-1 home draw with Sheffield Wednesday. I like Mick Mills too. He is a very detailed football analyst and I am regularly on Final Whistle afterwards, airing my views on the Town!

We visit Thailand almost every year so next time we will endeavour to make it to Phuket - whilst it is still relatively quiet, and it would be nice to meet you over a beer somewhere, and talk all things Ipswich, and of course Thailand!
