Not going to work parties. Good idea? on 09:11 - Feb 18 with 2351 views | WD19 | In those circumstances I tend to go, socialise heavily and then slip away early. Ticks the box so they ppl don't think I am a totally miserable/unsociable fecker.
Not going to work parties. Good idea? on 09:26 - Feb 18 with 2325 views | MJallday | i really wish i hadnt gone to the last one . this genuinely happened backstory is my company got taken over 9 months ago, and they aquired another one just before xmas - so they held a "get together" in a mutual location (bristol). they also invitied the cheif bigwigs from london . i was a bit p1ssed off because we were supposed to be there at 6, but the outgoing boss wouldnt less us leave until 5, so i didnt get into the centre of bristol until 7. so i steamed straight to the free bar, meeting up with new colleagues. they figured as it was a thursday night, we couldnt get too drunk (id sensibly booked the following day off for recovery) first couple of hours went well, i made polite small talk, handed out business cards, chewed fat over "what a great company it is" - all that b0lll0x. anyway, what i wasnt doing was keeping an eye on my staff, who were taking full advantage of the free bar much more readily than i was. got to about 12-1ish, so everyone (who are steaming at this point) piles back to the hotel we were staying at and straight to the bar... cheif executive orders "shots for everyone" - so people getting more and more hammered (im thinking , great stuff i got tommorow off) anyway, one of the lads decided that hed talk to our Cheif op officer, who was an ex boxer - a jokey laugh turned into comments between the pair of them of "i could knock you out" before i knew it, im holding back the aforementioned COO whilst 3 people are holding my guy back. we thought it would be a sensible time to send the pair of them to bed. so we sent them off unfortunaltey we didnt marshall them, and they then started on eachtoher again. much grabbing and shouting ensued. the Cheif exec officer then thought it was a great idea to calm the siutaiton by buying eveyrone MORE drinks. at this point, i thought "ive had enough of this" and start talking to my colleagues again, and (juveniley) take selfies at this point, the COO's PA then starts giving me abuse and ordering me to delete photos. so i told her "ok sure" - only to undelete 30 second later. silly cow moving back to the fight, this had kicked off again, and spilled out outside by this point and pushes/punches started to be thrown so i had the coo by the neck reminding him of his career. the ceo and finance guy had my guy held back. it was a flipping nightmare. anyway, we sent them off to bed only for now my guy to proclaim "why is he being victimised" - so he storms off into the bristol night (this is about 2am) so myself and one of my other guys go chasing him. at this point THEY get into a fight and one of them has his hands around his neck . im there on my own trying to separate the pair of them, so i put my phone on video (for my own protection) and managed to eventually separate the pair of them 4 am and a lot of shouting/throttling later - i get the pair of them to bed i got 3 hours sodding sleep that night, i then ended up going back into the office to make sure there wasdnt going to be any HR implications for any of them. aside from that, great night.

Not going to work parties. Good idea? on 09:45 - Feb 18 with 2261 views | gtsb1966 | Before I took early retirement I worked for the same company for 31 years and apart from my 25 year service dinner I never went on a works do. I had work colleagues and I have mates. I would see my work colleagues 37 hours a week. I didn't want to socialise with them out of work as that's all half of them would talk about....work. Leisure time was family and friends.
Not going to work parties. Good idea? on 09:49 - Feb 18 with 2230 views | textbackup | I used to never missing, because the people I worked with were my mates, now it's a group of people I care very little for, so I don't bother going

It is a decision that you have to make yourself and if you do not want to go it is fine. I only went as I was friends with 1 or 2 that I used to work with and I cannot drink so I just used to like meeting up. However, it becomes a whole different ball game if people are drinking and pictures appear on Facebook. If you do not feel comfortable in going, there is no problem whatsoever. I think it is a good idea. You can always say you are busy with family and friends and are unable to attend.

I used to drive to the Christmas do. Meant giving people lifts, but also prevented some from trying to force vast amounts of drink down my neck. When things got a bit silly, it was not my problem.

HR have never been people. There is nothing more tragic than watching junior staff talk to HR as though they are talking to an understanding friend.....when what they are actually talking to is a vindictive machine that never forgets.

until i witnessed it for myself, i wouldnt have believed it. thankfully it was just shoving and a bit of "w1lly waving" rather than full on assault. (although it was heading tht direction) when it stated getting really nasty the ceo did back off. i had the coo pinned up against the wall and the head of aquisitions had my guys . honestly, it was a comedy. i kept the photos/video, and showed my 2 staff on the monday. (still got them on my phone) - thankfully they'd shook hands and it was all forgotten between them. (although the coo hasnt shown his face since) - but they did say it wasnt their finest hour - my reply was that "well thats a f****g understatement" - right in front of the HR lady (who didnt have a clue what had happened as shed gone to bed) - so I just told her "what goes on tour stays on tour" and she seemed pretty happy with that that was definately a doo that people wont forget. i also suspect we wont get invited to other ones!!

HR are not nice people. * They go round "knowing personal things" about people - claiming confidentiallity, where as in reality, we all know they chat amongst themselves * they almost always have an agenda * They seemingly enjoy dropping everyone else in the sh1t, whist living in relative impunity themselves i hate them. they are maggots of the highest order

I always get rid of them, whenever I have to do a restructuring. Use Mentor or one of those services for advice, and make line managers do all the reviews etc.

Heh. Same here. Golden rule for work dos. Work late for a couple of hours and then get stuck in when everyone else is already three or four in. You're never the most pissed person there and never the focal point the following day.
