Just watching some old footage - forgot what a decent player he was.

I seem to remember he reckoned to have been improved by playing behind Arnie M. Never in his class but a very good player nonetheless, both fullback and midfield.. He had an elegance about the way he played and was good at picking a pass.

But not as good as Burley which ultimately cost us the treble.

Did he play on the right or left? I seem to remember he was on the left, could be wrong.

I don't remember but he came in for Burley and he may have switched sides with Mick Mills.

Yes he played left back, Mills moved to right back. Mills was right footed but played left back, the loss of Burley upset the set up of the team even if playing a left footer at left back appears to improve the balance.

Mick Mills doesn't get nearly as much credit as he should for playing left back so well.

Yes, I know he comfortably makes Ipswich best XI but as a footballer he doesn't get the nearly as much credit as Beattie or Wark.

McCall played on the left but Mick Mills switched from LB to RB when Burley got injured.
George Burley's injury did weaken the team because he was clearly better than Steve McCall.
Mills was equally as good at RB or LB in my opinion,a really top class fullback and also useful if played in MF.

I would say Beattie,Wark and Mills were all ITFC greats and all would have got into any other team at that time.
Beattie,in my opinion, was just about as near to complete footballer as you could hope to get.

Damn shame that he was missing for long periods in the three seasons 80-82. He'd have been worth the extra points we needed.

The second part of that statement is not true, injuries to several players in the run-in cost us the treble.

I have just checked and Beattie only started 49 games in all competitions after the 1978 Cup Final-the club played 173 games in that time.

He was a decent player, as others have said, not in the same class as Burley or Mills. In a way he was symptomatic of what happened to the team post 82 - each player we brought in to replace those leaving was worse than one they replaced.

Agree, but he and most of them would still be the best player if in current squad!

Ooo - they're teasers! Bottom one = Baltacha? Top one = Irvin Gernon?

Not sure I'm right on either of those though

But the team was unbalanced without Burley. It wasn't just the run in.

I remember feeling physically sick as a teenager when Beatie went down injured in the 1981 FA Cup semi. I knew we would go on to lose as it seemed to suck the energy out of the team and fans.

I think Burley's injury was damaging but not critical to our title hopes.
Thijssen missed 6 of the last 7 league games,Mariner missed 4 and Gates 2-if those three had been able to feature more that could well have made the difference.

Yes,his last league game that season was the win at Villa Park-at that point the title was in our hands-he played both legs of the UEFA Cup Final but no more league games.

Imagine how much that team would be worth today. Madness.

Arguably the team was better balanced. Mills was a natural right back , and McCall a left back. However there is no doubt that Burley was a better footballer than McCall.

Never understood his name, Irvin Gernon?! What country is that native to?

Must say he has an impressive pair of testicles in that pic in any case.
