Would you consider football banners to be a form of art?

If not, why not?

Is there a difference say, between nonsensical scribblings and the work of some easily distracted, though possibly talented graphic designers, when it comes to considering their role as art?

In as much as they all have something to say, be it rival teasing, or protest, or a sign of support or raising awareness for a cause etc.

Art is just manipulating materials to create meaning. Even the most embarrassing bedsheet banners qualify as art in that case, I reckon.

There have been some absolute crackers down the years, but we can all remember a few that were unintentionally hilarious! And sometimes the simpler the better, like graffiti that just says 'F*ck'-simple yet beautiful.

I reckon you could put together a fantastic coffee table book from pictures of the best / funniest banners over the years. Some of them are brilliant, same with political banners at marches.

By contrast the standard union Jack, with XYZ FC on it is pushing it to be classified as art.

Any patticular ones you are thinking about Jeera? The famous HJC one, I helped hang it yesterday so saw it in detail. That was an incredible amount of work / design that you only see and appreciate close up.

As part of a course I'm doing the question popped up and of course Liverpool's protests get a strong mention too.

There's samples across the board, ranging from Picasso to football banners - which if I'm honest I'd never really considered too much.

And there's some graffiti in there too, as mention by jreuser above.

My first banner memory is of one hung from the rear of a coach post Highbury and read Mariner's Crew Sail to Wembley.

Yeah, the banners, including the one in my avatar, are really important to the people who fly them. They will hang them in the pub, at the match, where ever they feel like it really. Couple of times in London I've been drinking with the one in my avatar.

Have to say in 100% of times, we have only had positive comments from others.

There was a famous graffiti in Lpool, but probably repeated elsewhere.

"Jesus saves" and someone had added "and Rush scores from the rebound"

Meaning and context is important laggers. To those showing them and for the viewer, if they're supposed to understand the message of course.

Do you see it as art?

I suppose, as jreuser suggests, anything, (particularly visual?), used to express oneself is art in one way or anther.

I do as a rule. Same with the funny ones (as posted above). Art to me is as simple as something that brings pleasure to others. So yeah, and I'd include a lot of graffiti too. Always felt that was under appreciated as an art tbh. Body art too.

Most things I've read on the question of 'What is (or isn't) art?' boil down to intention- specifically the intention of the creator. Whether it makes people happy or otherwise is really neither here nor there as we all interpret things in our own way.

Aesthetics by David Cooper is a great book for an all-round view on this type of thing, but mainly in fine art terms that can be applied elsewhere.
