Erdogan set to win Referendum 17:40 - Apr 16 with 3219 viewsm14_blue

A huge blow to the values of democracy and liberalism. Also unlikely to help stability in the Middle East.

The world is a dark and worrying place at the moment.

I would imagine that was rigged and he was always going to win.

Another world event I was wondering about is the North Korean missile launch. I wonder if whoever was in charge of that is still breathing.

Truly impaired.

Not a blow to the values of democracy since it is the wish of the majority of the voters.

I'm not sure it's rigged. However, there has been a huge propaganda effort on behalf of the government position and the 'no' campaign has been restricted by a range of dubious measures.

Unfortunately Erdogan and his party have a huge amount of support in the rural and more conservative parts of Turkey who feel that he gives them a voice that the previously secular governments did not. The reforms were also supported by Turkey's main nationalist/anti-EU party.

Ataturk would not be impressed by the current state of the country.

You obviously haven't been following the campaigns very closely, or indeed events in Turkey over the last 9 months.

Indeed, this could well mark the end of Ataturk's secular Turkey.

Numerous videos currently circulating showing very blatant small level electoral corruption for the evet side. Remains to be seen if this was state sponsored but it wouldn't surprise me.

Besides which, it's always going to be fairly easy to win elections when you have imprisoned or closed down all media which opposes you. Incredible that he only achieved 51% really, and was beaten here in Istanbul.

It is democratic though. Even if you don't like the result.

That really depends on your understanding of what constitutes democracy.

Erdogan declaring victory, opposition disputing.

You can see the situation heading south pretty sharpish over there.

This is a disaster for Turkey and Europe. Civil War will be the result, another Syria.

It may be democratic in the literal sense, but it is anything but free when you're having a vote in a country that imprisons more journalists than any other and has thrown thousands of dissidents into prison and fired thousands in the army, civil servants and in education purely on suspicion of opposing Erdogan.

1.8m votes included even though they had no valid election stamp.....

Already proposing introducing the death penalty so guess he's totally given up on joining the EU. Shame to see a country go to pot so quickly. Surely won't remain secular for too much longer.

Of course it was Erdogan who would once said that democracy, for him, was like a bus: he would ride it until it got him to his desired destination, at which point he would get off.

I think he might be about to get off.
