Daryl Murphy 10:18 - May 9 with 2588 views | ThatMuhrenCross | Would it be completely inconceivable for me to dream of Daryl Murphy being back here for next season? Needless to say he'll be at a Championship club somewhere next season. Newcastle will sign a couple of big name strikers and he will be surplus to requirement. Lets hope we can have him back!

DM had one fabulous season for us, the others were mediocre, what we missed was having a target man after he left and still playing the same way,

Daryl Murphy on 10:21 - May 9 with 2560 views | Steve_M | It would be a dreadful, backward step. Proof the club doesn't have a plan, let alone a strategy to move forwards. We need to replace him properly with someone who might be around for a few seasons and then we can make a profit on. I suspect Murphy will want another go in the Premier League knowing that he will be better for not playing every week at his age. If he does drop down to this division it will be to Derby or SWFC or one of this season's relegated clubs - they'll be able to afford his wages.

Daryl Murphy on 10:22 - May 9 with 2543 views | hype313 | We wouldn't be able to take his wages, also bar that one season he wasn't the most prolific of strikers. Add to the fact that everyone moaned that we always went the direct route with him, other teams didn't need a phd to work out how to nullify our threat.

In addition, he's now 34 years old. If relied upon for every game, there is the danger of getting into a Douglas-style situation where the skills are still there but the body can't do it any more. Murphy's pace (for a big man), strength and balance are key attributes of his game.

Daryl Murphy on 10:40 - May 9 with 2420 views | CaptainObvious | he was already in decline last season. with our lack of creativity he'd probably have scored about 9 goals this season had he stayed.

THis. Although we all loved Murphy when he was here, let's remember him as he was. We have had a few old players back and I can't think of one who played as well as we remembered him. We don't want to have him back only to find he isn't as good as he used to be. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't know how many games he started (or was involved with) for Newcastle but he seems to have been used perfectly. Had he played for us, he'd have been asked to plough through 40+ matches, up front, chasing his own flick-ons.

Records show? He's scored less than that this season but only played any number of games since the turn of the year. Three seasons of 10-15 goals before that, one of which he was injured for large parts of. It wouldn't be a good move but this trend to talk down every player we have or had is getting tedious.

Backward step? Have you see the type of player we are in the running for these days? If he had never played here with his record alone we would normally be creaming ourselves at finally signing an established Championship striker instead of loanees and cast offs from everywhere else. He's too good for us, that's why he left. People came up with the same nonsense about Mings, that somehow Mings was a backward step from Knudsen... A backwards step is playing worse players. If you can sign top end, established Championship players and you decide to keep the players who recorded the worse finish this club has had in nearly 60 years that's the definition of backwards! We're not talking about Bajner here... we're talking about the man who is arguably the best player we have had for the decade. He will join Sunderland and be re-promoted with them, we will be relegated with loanees and cast offs you regard as a step forward!

Expect him back Steve, you know that our club is not capable of thinking outside the box! [Post edited 9 May 2017 15:00]

Yes, a backward step in terms of the use of our budget and the direction of the club. We can't sign top-end Championship players, we can't afford what they cost now.
