Brett Pitman's goal record at Championship level 18:33 - May 10 with 3660 viewsSimonds92

is slightly better than 1 in 4 (3.86). And offers nothing else to the team. I've never understood why people rate him.

I would imagine a lot of those appearances are as a substitute. (Certainly Bournemouth and here).

However, that poses a different issue - why is he seen as not good enough to start - lack of fitness to play 90 minutes, or not rated high enough?

In all honesty, probably one of our higher earners, so makes sense to free up some wages, especially if we have identified a striker we want to target.

McGoldrick offers a lot more than goals.

Probably quite a few of those sub appearances, on many occasions he has improved our game coming on late.

In a good team with a footballing manager he would start many more games and be a lot more useful. Would be class in the right team.

15 goals in 42 starts and 28 sub appearances according to the TWTD story. That's exactly 1 goal per 4 games - 4 goals in 23 appearances this season.

Fundamentally, that's not good enough.

A substitute appearance isn't a game so that's not true. 28 sub appearance collectively adds up to about 5 games I should think

What is David McGoaldricks goal record at Championship level?

Although I agree he should be more prolific, McGoldrick isn't purely a goalscorer. He holds the ball up and creates chances for others. Pitman is purely a 'goal scorer' with a distinctly average record of doing just that.

His record at Championship level is:-

Southampton - 12 goals in 64 apps
Nottingham Forest - 8 goals in 63 apps
Ipswich - 32 goals in 110 apps

So total is 52 goals in 237. That is over 1 in 4 games. almost 1 in 5 games.

That is based on Wikipedia and is only league goals in the "championship" or whatever it was called at that time.

EDIT: you could add 5 apps and no goals for Rep of Ireland as well if you wanted......

EDIT 2- looks like Wikipedia only had up to Feb 2017 so according to soccerway he has played 30 games and scored 5 goals so that would adjust his record for Ipswich to 34 goals in 125 games (most of his were starts for us)

Total overall now 54 in 252 apps

Sorry, but this is pure fact. It's not opinion. You can argue that sub appearances aren't full appearances, but he has scored a disproportionate number of goals as a sub and not enough when he has started games.

However you dress it up, that's just not good enough and it's getting worse. His Championship stats were better before he joined, got progressively worse last season and then worse again this season.

As I say McGoldrick is hardly prolific but has other aspects to his game. Quoting stats on McGoldrick doesn't make Pitman a better player, if anything it may indicate that we need more than 1 new striker. McGoldrick frustrates me a lot but he does influence and impact games not purely by scoring goals.

Somewhat distorted by his awful spell at Forest too

His record here is actually much better than I thought. Now we just need to find a way to keep him fit... 🤔

In the last couple of seasons has been abysmal. This has been due to negative formation ť and having rubbish central midfield players. Strikers in exceptional form can temporarily paper over the cracks but until the manager is changed, there will be no improvement. Pitman is probably paying the price for pointing out these shortcomings to MM and is now being shown the door.
