The new Hinkley point plant isn't worth it. However, nuclear power done correctly is worth it. Ideally we should be leading the way in thorium reactor research bu of course we aren't.

Instead we have asked the French to build us one, using Chinese funding, with a design which has already generated massive overspends elsewhere.

Embarrassing really given we were the first country to connect a nuclear power station to the grid on an industrial scale in 1956.

Strongly disagree

It is yesterday's technology, always fails to live up to its promise

Expensive and leaves a toxic nightmare for many thousands of years

If all the cash that we have uselessly sp*nked on this nightmare had been invested in renewables, we would have all the electricity that we need and then some.....near to free and at no cost to future generations.

You are entitled to strongly disagree.

However I fear your response shows a lack of knowledge on thorium reactors. I would agree on standard uranium reactors.

The only reason we don't have thorium reactors now (which cannot meltdown) is because you cannot create plutonium for bombs in them. However the world has enough plutonium now so no issues for the major powers to invest.

Renewables weren't really available in the 1960's when thorium should have been researched and implemented and will always be subject to the issues around electrical storage. Molten salts is good but not applicable everywhere. Thorium reactors in tandem with renewables would provide a constant, reliable and safe power.

Until fusion, which is obviously the ultimate goal if possible.
