Anyone else complain against the Mail for their horrendous article... 18:38 - Jun 23 with 4447 viewsSwailsey

About the Nigerian man?

I just received this response..

Dear Sir/Madam

I write further to our earlier email regarding your complaint about an article headlined “The man ‘whose faulty fridge started tower inferno’: Neighbour reveals how Ethiopian taxi driver raised the alarm when deadly blaze started in his fourth-floor kitchen” published by Mail Online on 15 June 2017.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) has received a number of complaints about this article. In order to be able to respond in a timely manner, we have prepared a response which deals with the various concerns raised by complainants.

On receipt of a complaint, IPSO’s Executive reviews it to ensure that it falls within our remit, and discloses a possible breach of the Editors’ Code of Practice. The Executive has now completed an assessment of complaints under the terms of the Code.

IPSO is able to consider complaints from an individual who has been personally and directly affected by the alleged breach of the Editors’ Code of Practice; complaints from a representative group affected by an alleged breach where there is a substantial public interest; and complaints from third parties about accuracy. In the case of third party complaints, we do need to consider the position of the party most closely involved.

The article reported that the fire in Grenfell Tower was allegedly started by a “faulty fridge” in Behailu Kebede’s fourth-floor kitchen. The article stated that Mr Kebede “raised the alarm after flames took hold of his flat,” and “banged on his neighbour’s door, potentially saving hundreds of lives.” The article included statements about the tragedy from various witnesses, including Mr Kebede’s neighbour Maryam Adam, and others who escaped from the building.

Complaints expressed concern that the article was inaccurate, in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors’ Code, as the cause of the fire has not been established by investigators. The Executive took the view that alleged inaccuracy related directly to Mr Kebede and the events that took place in his flat on the night of the fire, and that it would not be appropriate or possible to investigate your complaint without his input and consent. As such, we will not be able to consider your complaint further.

Many complaints raised concerns under Clause 2 (Privacy), Clause 3 (Harassment), Clause 4 (Intrusion into grief or shock) and Clause 12 (Discrimination), due to the article’s comments regarding Mr Kebede. In this instance, the concerns raised under these Clauses relate directly to Mr Kebede. Since complainants are not acting on his behalf with his knowledge and consent, we were unable to consider these aspects of these complaint further.

You are entitled to request that the Executive’s decision not to take forward your complaint be reviewed by IPSO’s Complaints Committee. To do so you will need to write to us in the next seven days, setting out the reasons why you believe the decision should be reviewed. Please note that we are unable to accept requests for review made seven days after the date of this email.

We would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to consider the points you have raised, and have shared this correspondence with the newspaper to make it aware of your concerns.

Best wishes,

Lauren Sloan

What was horrendous about it? I asked at the time and no-one then seemed to be able to say why then.

The nationality of the person for a start. Identifying the person at all was bad enough - his fridge caught fire as they can, but it truly was not his fault that the fire spread.

Being the Daily Heil, there was an unpleasant sense that they were trying to blame a foreigner, something that other papers seen to have avoided even insinuating.

Or that it's because he's Ethiopian?

It was entirely unnecessary to identify him at all.

Why?

What's the problem? No one's blaming the individual for it.

Typical PC bedwetting

it was unnecessary to label him as Ethiopian - they wouldn't have described a local as "Briton Terry Clarke...." The rest of it seems fairly routine.

The author of the complaint has fallen into the trap of the lefty campaign to suppress news they don't agree with. He doesn't even know why he's complaining, just going along with the shouting. I wish people would think a lot more. The article complained about was reported accurately, and praised the Ethiopian for alerting his neighbours and saving many lives.

How do you know what trap I've fallen into?

After reading your opinions on things, I won't lose too much sleep. You're very patronising.

I see the accusations that the Sun's reporter impersonated a Grenfell family member at the hospital have been found to be false.
People may not like the Mail, the Sun etc but it's a bit rich accusing them of lying when you're doing the same fuelled by a left-wing witch hunt.
There's a real feeling now on both sides of the political fence, that if you don't like another person's view, it's discredited as fake news.
That, in my opinion, is hypocritical and not healthy.
Anyone who calls for a paper to be banned or, for that matter, pathetically hides them in supermarkets is setting a course for censorship.
If you don't like something, don't buy it, don't read it. It's that simple.

I'll agree with you there are a lot of people nowadays who get offended on everyone else's behalf.
This may not be the case with this thread but it has become a national pastime.
