Would imagine there'd be a chunky signing on fee to keep him within the wage budget.
Had we not signed him, I'd have been mightily peeved however this is a real statement of intent at our level of spending (as opposed to, for example, paying over £5m for a French striker).

Still, it's good to see that we have pushed the boat out. Clearly the fee is balanced by the high wages and the length of contract so he's been given a lot all round. Having said that, he now needs to match that with consistent performances across a whole season. | | | |

They were never going to do what we've done and pay him up to leave, and will know he's got value elsewhere so there's a tension there in the negotiations.
