An acceptable abbreviation would be the "proof is in the eating".
The phrase "have your cake and eat it" is equally wrong, and quite nonsensical when you think about it. The phrase correctly expressed is "you can't eat your cake and have it", which is inelegant but is at least the right way round!
When I was younger, I had the most vivid dream I think I've ever had. I was investigating a murder and all the locals kept on saying 'the proof is in the pudding'. Eventually it all became clear when I pointed at a fat kid and exclaimed, "you're the pudding!" Turns out he had eaten the murder weapon.
I still maintain this would make a good made-for-tv movie
