As I've said previously, there is simply no way we can sustain our current level of animal product consumption in terms of both volume and competitive pricing.

The human population is the issue, there are so many of us that generally there isn't enough stuff to sustain us.

Nothing really can be done about that though, people will continue to live longer on average and "developing" countries will continue to grow their population.

Nigeria is predicted to have 500m people by 2050. A truly ludicrous number of people for the 32nd largest country in the world.

There is plenty of food if there are moves to control waste and eliminate the crooks who are profiteering from manipulation.

Africa could be the richest continent on the planet with sensible governments and proper policies.

Sustainability of population and food supply aren't the same things.

Are you saying the human population isn't an issue? It's a huge strain on the planet. Countries not much bigger than France shouldn't have populations of half a billion people.

That is clearly unsustainable.

"That is clearly unsustainable. "

Agreed but in recognisiotn of that what did I say about Africa?

& now the UK government is cuddling up to countries with similar problems who wish to export their surplus population here?

You said it could be the richest continent, which was irrelevant so I didn't reply to it.

As long as the population continues to grow (11bn estimate for 2100 - nearly double the current population) the finite resources we have will continue to get stretched.

Your last line is just a bit odd. I know you hate the government but you do take it to so really far-fetched extremes.

Which then prompts the question, what would you do about human population growth.

Agreed and I've already said on the previous post that I don't think there is much you can discuss about it.

It's a function out ability to feed, repair and distribute ourselves which has historically been an increasing value.

The most densly populated country on the planet is Monaco at circa 26k per Km.

Perhaps you should look a bit more closely at what government does not what it says?

I've been wondering for days whether the title for this thread was a deliberate pun.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

An interesting question which of course has its roots in history for a number of reasons -
Grow the population to be the 'pensoin' for their parents
Grow the population to be the cannon fodder for governments who wish to fight wars
Grow the population to accommodate economic growth - somethin Italy & Germany have had to deal with in the last 2 -3 decades
& now a problem as the economic plan is to shrink the economy of the world meaning too many people and, in the wrong place.

If we take the UK in isolation there are considerable volumes of foodstuffs available but we cannot access it due to the Wildlife & Countryside act.

It is a form of cartel & control to keep prices high

We have a lot of farm shops where I live but they are now no longer credible because they have moved from selling farm produce to selling produce e.g they don't grow pineapples in Suffolk / Norfolk. No longer is the objective to sell quality food it is now no different from the supermarket.

Pity.

They are not all like that! Obviously.

That is a hopeless generalisation. As I said, obviously they are not all like that.

I just spent literally 10 seconds googling and found these, they all sell online and a couple are in East Anglia, so many will be able to visit the shops/farms in person:-

I know some of them, a lot are very expensive.
If I go to Norwich I go to 'Pauls Butchers', he sells game meat & unusual stuff at a fractoin of the price of some of the places on the net.

But you must remember that gae shooting is not for food but as a luxury past time for the wealthy- How many £'s is a game shoot week-end in Yorkshire?

Here most of the pheasants/ partridge etc, shot have so much lead in them they are only good for burning which is what happens to truck loads shot by those who can afford the price

I'm on a very low budget and from what I've seen, most of those are perfectly affordable - I just eat less meat these days (about twice a week) which more than compensates.

Not difficult to find tasty alternatives to meat these days either - I particularly like the Vbites Felafels (tho their switch from sunflower oil to rapeseed oil is disappointing) and their Cheezly is brilliant - I wouldn't be able to taste the difference between that and "proper" cheddar in a blind test.

I'm afraid I wouldn't eat those as they are processed & they don't say what the 'preservatives' are

I am generally against processed food

But I do accept the need to budget

Foods in season can be affordable depending on the outlet. I normally pay about £7 for a brace of partridge a bit more for pheasants and wild ducks.

Rabbit is OK if you can trust the source

Longshore herrings are good value
All if you buy from trusted suppliers

Everything in moderation is fine, I don't eat them more than once or twice a week at most.

But I'm so limited by allergies I have to go more with what I can eat. Can't eat oily fish like herring sadly, which is a big miss - used to love mackerel!
