Westley to bat at 3, Malan to play if we don't think we'll need 2 spinners. Malan would bat at 5 with Stokes/Bairstow and Ali all moving down one place.

Root
Cook
Jennings
Westley
Stokes
Bairstow
Malan
Moeen
Dawson
Broad
Roland-Jones
Wood
Anderson

Wouldn't be surprised if Roland-Jones replaces the injured Wood and we field three debutants

Seems sensible enough. Westley is in fine form. Malan was superb in the t20 at Cardiff, which is a different kettle of fish entirely to a test, but I'd give him a go nonetheless. I'm sorry but Dawson has been a waste of time, he hasn't scored any runs, he doesn't take wickets and he can't tie an end up. Use Root as second spinner if needed. I don't know enough about Roland-Jones to know if he should replace Mark Wood, who I think will come good again in tests, but right now looks off the boil, I guess he may come in too though.

Roland-Jones probably deserves a shot after a couple of good seasons in Division One.

If Jamie Overton was fit (ironically injured on England Lions duty recently) then I think he would have replaced Wood.

I like Wood, and, as you say, I expect him to come good again.

The Malan selection is an odd one though. After Trent Bridge it was clear that we are in need of someone who can play a gritty, stubborn innings in the middle of the order, but they go and select a batsmen whose game is based around T20. You could argue that Buttler would have been as sensible a batting option really.

Hopefully he gets to play (in place of Dawson) and puts in a shift as we are in desperate need of some depth to our batting options.. even if we are lauded for our ability to 'bat deep' we don't have the ability to bat for very long currently

We seem to try and incorporate too many all rounders in the team instead of getting specialist in. For example Ali, who I like, but is a batsman that can bowl, Dawson who is a bowler who can bat. I have nothing against Ballance, however the amount of times I have seen him bat internationally he is a walking wicket and an lbw waiting to happen. He just isn't good enough to be in the England XI. In summary, pick specialist batsman and bowlers and avoid picking players that can do both as it dilutes the quality of the team....there said it!

Malan's game is not based around T20.

He has always been a naturally attacking middle-order batsman, well before T20 came along.

What we actually need to is start picking players on pure talent rather than if they are good characters in the dressing room or good on the XBox

Get a couple of weird horrible talented b******s in a la Australia 1989

Malan consistently outperforms Buttler in the red ball format

Malan is a far superior red ball batsman, he has scored 18 tons in 142 games compared to Buttlers 4 in 78. We should just enjoy Buttler smashing teams about in all white ball cricket not hiding down at 7 and not keeping.

Great news about Westley, played against him a few times and he is a really nice bloke and would also tip that it's a matter of time before his team mate Dan Lawrence gets a call up.

Westley is a respectable off break bowler, as well.

Nice to see Westley being confirmed as playing as he's earned it and having a right hander there is something we need.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
