Isnt that the guy who wrote mary had a little lamb and mull of Kintyre? Lennon was by far and away best writer and poet

But in his defence, he also wrote silly love songs and the frog chorus.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

He's also the bloke who wrote Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, Fool on the Hill and Hey Jude.

Isn't Lennon the bloke who wrote Oh Yoko, the Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill and Beautiful Boy?

Yesterday and hey jude are his two most famous songs. He didnt write Eleanor Rigby on his own. Beautiful Boy is actually paul mcCartneys favourite song re - desert island discs. ; )

Steven Wilson, great shout.

I sometimes put a tree track in one of my loony music threads.

Wasn't it Godley and Creme? Anyway I wasn't really a fan, but they were definitely writers of clever lyrics (perhaps sometimes smartarse lyrics?)

All four of 10cc wrote lyrics. Often in various combinations.

Creme is probably the cleverer wordsmith although Stewart did write Wall Street Shuffle.

This was a goodish song, and a very weird video. (Although not as good as I remembered - funny how the years distort, or your tastes change)

This thread is about top lyricists. He may have written some great songs, but lyrical strength is rarely a feature?

My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on till the dawn
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm
What you doin' on your back, aah
What you doin' on your back, aah?
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood

No Craig David?

You asked him on a Monday... If you'd asked him on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, his answer might've been different... or even if on a Sunday he would've been quite chilled, I would think.

You have to start by discounting anyone before 1970 - otherwise you'd have to choose Don Black, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Otherwise, I'd say Morrissey, Chris Difford and Billy Bragg.

Another vote for Nigel Blackwell from me, too many fine examples to list, but try this one for starters, particularly at 1 minute 52 :

At last!

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
