Sir Ray wrote some great observational lyrics, and also some great shouting rock lyrics - All Day and All of the Night, You Really Got Me, etc.

I know many will see the name and be out off by his politics, but Billy Bragg's other string to his how is some very poignant, often painful and usually funny and clever writing about the humanities and intimates of human relationships.
St Swithin's Day is my favourite. He takes the old English folk saying about sun or rain on St Swithin's Day lasting and weaves a plaintive song to lost love via a railway station and multiple extended metaphors. And he was only in his early 20's when he did it. | | | |
