Tour De France simpleton question.. 16:38 - Jul 23 with 11804 views | strikalite | Froome goes into last stage 54 seconds ahead, there is 81km left to ride, why has he won it? Nobody is racing, if he came off or the second place guy beat him by 54secs then he could still lose it, no? Obviously it's no ha but enlighten me please... ta!!

So if he was just 5 seconds ahead coming to the last stage would it still be like a parade and not a race? Is it because he's so far ahead?
Tour De France simpleton question.. on 16:43 - Jul 23 with 5704 views | Plums | The last stage for the GC contenders was yesterday. Today is a procession culminating in a sprint race for the stage win.

It's always a parade with a competitive sprint at the end by tradition. I suppose the leader could still lose if he fell off and was unable to complete the course but he'd have to a bit daft to manage that.

So in theory he could still lose if the second place guy sprinted to the line six seconds ahead of Froome IF Froome was going into this last stage only five seconds ahead?

In a bunch sprint finish, so long as you are in the bunch you all get the same time.

Yes, although they'd be very unpopular with the rest of the peloton.

Sky have the strongest team, due to the nature of the last stage (laps) it would be very hard for any breakaway to succeed.

That is true but theoretically it is possible and I think has happened previously in terms of finishing positions changing.

Realistically there are only a handful of teams who feel they have a rider with a chance of winning overall, many teams have a lead rider to contest the green jersey, sprinters, many of the stages finish with a sprint finish. This year Froome will win overall without actually winning a stage, that does not happen very often.

Well it's true though isn't it. What's the point of calling the last stage a 'stage' when it's no more than a procession. Absolutely ridiculous.

Didn't mean it in a nasty way at all Rommy, the last stage is for the sprinters, always has been, just a shame Cav and Segan won't be there to contest it!

My own simpleton question, but why is that the case, rather than each rider being timed exactly? Appreciate historically this may not have been possible but could obviously be done now. Or is it for other reasons?

The bunch sprint can be pretty dangerous, ask Cavendish! You can only get so many riders across the width of the road, it is mainly to try to mske the last part f the race safer, however if you watch Segan put Cav in the barriers in week one it does not always work!
