With a wealth of talent there is no way I can do a top three from keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Reni, Bill Bruford, Bonzo, Simon Phillips.

But for me the stand out is Phil Collins. His work with Genesis from 1970 - 1977 is phenomenal. At times it is a fusion of Rock and Jazz.

I know nothing about music but my friend is a pro session muso and he said U2's rhythm section is the absolute worst and they have people help them out live. Hope this helps.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Reni is definitely the most original. Such an instinctive and natural style.

Pete Townsend tried to get Reni in his band for a world tour.

The answer is Charlie Watts, he is classically trained.

Some great names here already.

I would add Mark Brzezicki (Big Country and session drummer on The Cult "Love" album) who might be the best I've ever seen live in his heyday.

Also Stewart Copeland

And Ringo. Yes, yes, I don't care, I love how Ringo plays.

Lots of people on this page were classically trained.

As an aside, as was I for a few years before giving up percussion as 'too hard' (strings or keys, please), so alone it isn't a measure of greatness

Mark Brzezicki has played with Fish's live band alongside his brother Steve....just a bit of Marillion based info :)

Sorry, but you simply cannot have Keith Moon in this list. A showman, yes, but technically inept and lacking any motoric skills.

Real top quality drummers:

Roger Powell - The Action/Mighty Baby/Habibiya
Brian Bennett - Shadows/Mohawks/library sessionist
Clem Cattini - Rumpelstiltskin/Frog/Tornados/library sessionist
Barry Morgan - CCS/Blue Mink/Morgan Bluetown/library sessionist

Poll: W or W

There is a big difference with Keith Moon & The Who with other outfits though. The Who seemed to follow the drumming rather than the drummer following the rest of the band.

Moon was initiative inasmuch as he didn't keep time and used the drums as a lead instrument doing his own thing.

In my humble opinion of course.
