With a wealth of talent there is no way I can do a top three from keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Reni, Bill Bruford, Bonzo, Simon Phillips.

But for me the stand out is Phil Collins. His work with Genesis from 1970 - 1977 is phenomenal. At times it is a fusion of Rock and Jazz.

Some great names here already.

I would add Mark Brzezicki (Big Country and session drummer on The Cult "Love" album) who might be the best I've ever seen live in his heyday.

Also Stewart Copeland

And Ringo. Yes, yes, I don't care, I love how Ringo plays.

He wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

A Jasper Carrot joke that seems to have been attributed to Jon Lennon. Eben though he had been dead three years when Carrot made it.

Phil Collins - a genius. Saw him at Hyde Park a couple of weeks back - Phil is a mess body-wise, which is very sad - and he can just sit down and sing... was fantastic vocally but Phil's 16 year old lad Nicholas played the drums - here's one for the future - he has it in his genes.

Bill Ward

Thanks for mentioning Bill Ward, love his style.
As a poor drummer myself, I'm in awe of good guys. Pick Withers played some lovely stuff at a workshop I went to a few years back.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Steve Morris of Yorkshire Ripper fame.

Him and Hooky got pulled in for that. I've been on a bit of a New Order/Joy Division/Factory binge the last couple of weeks. I've read Hooky's book about New Order, then I read Barney's book, now I'm reading Hooky's book about Joy Division and I've got Tony Wilson's next. Also got a beautiful big glossy coffee-table art book of all the complete Factory Records artwork. Some of that Peter Savile stuff on the JD/NO sleeves is superb.
