There was a big hoo ha in the car park behind the north stand that I wasn't around for. BossBeards your man for that one.

Actually, I think Victorywillhappen might have some photos he could upload.

Notice from all those pictures that people never wore their colours, as you needed to blend in sometimes when things got a bit nasty.

There are no colours there because the pictures are all of lads. Plenty of barmies / scarfers would still be decked out like Christmas trees.

I policed Pompey's football matches through the late 70s and 80s. I recognise quite a few of the faces in your link, as football 'mobs' go they were quite 'effective' and would give Millwall, Chelsea and the like a good run out.
In 1987 they even put forward a candidate for the 1987 election. Unfortunately they selected poor old Marty Hughes who was several sandwiches short of a picnic, and had physical disabilities as well. He took it very seriously though.

Remember in 2003 I was in Rileys after the game against them. A huge roar went up and lads piled out and into the Drum opposite where 50 or so Pompey were. Few minutes later same lads come back, most covered in blood with landlord of the Drum with the police trying to pick out anyone involved. Didn't a Pompey lad get slashed and taken to hospital? Remember they got escorted to the station from there.

And before the blokes that say "you're hard" or "pathetic mate". I was 16 so wasn't involed. The same few on here seem to love getting involved in threads like this despite 'hating' it!

Was at polytechnic there from 1985-88 so lived off watching Pompey for those years with the occasional town game. They went to spurs for a league cup game in 1985. Tottenham expected a gate of 14,000 but Pompey took that many on their own. 36,000 for the replay. This particular lot were indeed a bunch of tw*ts

Were you on duty with them when they arranged to meet Soton at Waterloo and all hell happened, when was it 87?

Remember it getting messy in PR after a match around that time. They had a reputation for being a real handful and gave the bigger firms a run for their money.

Town had a "firm" at that time, most clubs did, not in the same league though in terms of numbers or organisation.

Feb 87', right old do'! A lot of lads were picked up during the following week, from home or even work! Several went down, including someone who had been taking pics. i think he'd buried the camera knowing what was coming, but handed it over. I won't put any initials! Boots would have loved developing those! Pompey had Mariner, and maybe O'Callaghan playing.

Don't think I did that one. I used to do the away trips and outings as a spotter for the local police, I even did Portman Road a couple of times.
They would fight anyone but they preferred Millwall, Southampton and Chelsea. Had some spectacular and hairy old running battles in Fratton Road and Goldsmith Avenue in those days.

The battle of the cattle market in Feb 87 was a direct result of them getting a good seeing to at their place 30th August 1986.

Even if there were a statute of limitations... I can't remember the names I know there were 2 there who had their 18th birthdays on that date. I recall with clarity there being 3 mini buses [2 x Wilhire & a blue one not sure where it was from] and there were a couple of car loads in a convoy.

Kicked off afterwards Pompey weren't expecting what they got so organised a bigger than normal mob for PR where they encountered as big a turn out of town lads as I've seen outside Naaridge games including a few who weren't actually town fans [including one nasty piece of work from Chantry who was an active Chelsea hooligan]

Remember most of this thru friends who were involved, I was at both games but not involved.

The court case included a site visit to the Cattle Market car park where above mentioned Chantry Chelsea guided the jury thru the to and fro of the day. This I know 'cos I used to work in the GRE building overlooking the Cattle Market car park and saw the site visit.

Not being funny but they don't look very intimidating. Looks like Northgate upper 6th on a bus trip to Chessington.

I seem to recall CCTV and the hoolivan (remember that?) making its debut around this time at PR and several bans being dished out. Bit of a set to with Derby that same campaign from memory.

The Hoolivan! Hah, forgot that! Derby did actually come into the North from that big gate in the bottom corner that led onto PR.
