PC / Gaming nerds... 16:56 - Aug 6 with 14625 viewssparks

I think its about time I upgraded my rig- but haven't done anything of that sort for a good few years now and am somewhat out of touch.

I've often found that the builds suggested in PC Gamer magazine have been useful- but currently their bidget build is real bargain basement, and then the mid range one massively more expensive. Im wondering if there is some sensible middle ground... Their budget suggestions are a Pentium G4560 for £50 with a 4gb GTX 1050 for £135. Their mid range is a Ryzen 5 for £150 (fair enough perhaps) coupled with a GTX 1070 8GB for £350...

I have a Phenom 2- X4 955 processor which still is pretty decent for its age, but probably ought to go. If thats the case, then I am looking at the whole rig rather than just chucking in a new GPU.

Any thoughts / insights?

I'm no wiz when it comes to computers when I built my rig about 3 years ago now this is a great website to use and one that always keeps up to date. Looking at it again makes me think I might have to start thinking about an upgrade too! http://www.logicalincrements.com/

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com is a good site as is http://www.logicalincrements.com

For a gaming machine a Ryzen r5 1600 ia a great choice. Paired with a b350 motherboard and compatible (make sure you check) 3000 ddr 4 ram they overclock easily.

Add an RX580 and a good ssd system drive to make a competent and fairly future proof machine.

Right now memory and graphics card prices are inflated by the boom in cryptocurrency mining. Hopefully this will come to an end shortly and things will get back to normal so it might be worth waiting another couple of months. On the other hand it might not so its a bit of a gamble.

I can not recommend enough pcspecialist.co.uk if you are having a custom computer built. My PC is 4 years old from them now and they still offer support and advice when I do upgrades.

They seem good but I'll probably build my own for budgetary reasons and because it's fun.

I bought a performance laptop from them in January and will concur they are very good.

Homie, a 'gaming PC' is still a toy, the only difference is the price.

By way of update, I bit the bullet... built a new one with ryzen 5 1600, 6gb Geforce 1060, 16gb ram and ssd in a shiny phanteks case with 3 speed fan controller.

Well judging from my own experience with my kids they were "PC/Gaming nerds" but have grown out of all that stuff now.

I thought and still think it's a young persons' interest..or am I wrong?

So is obsessively following a football team though, to be fair...

I used to think like that. There's no way I'd swap my console for my pc in gaming terms now
Sure you can buy better gfx ram hdds etc, but by the time you've bought it it's out of date and there's always better coming out all the time

Games are designed to run on consoles so buy a console

I would say following a football team is mainly an older persons' pastime these days as they have more disposable cash. You only have to look at our away following on match days!

Sparks' 'rig' probably cost more than a couple of season tickets, so not sure your comment would stand up under his cross examination

Well I would say I spend at least a hundred pounds every away football trip. That's not taking into account home games.

PCs are mostly way ahead of consoles, and when you factor in the relative sophistication of games and the enormous modding communuties etc, there is no comparison. Ive not upgraded mine significantly for a long time- but its still managing (albeit on console level graphics settings...) most stuff.

Gaming is demographically not an exclusively young persons' thing. Hasnt been for a long time.

And has more value, imo, than watching most television as the vast majority of folks seem to do of an evening.

My rig was about a grand all in. It will last me years and will enable me to pass on my current machine to my son, so that the one he uses can go to my daughter... So they will both have access to machines for both games and homework.

You're wrong, amazingly enough.

If you look at the demographics for gamers one of the biggest markets is males above 40.

I enjoy books, films and computer gaming, they all have very similar aspects to them.

Let us know about how it stacks up. Should be able to run all games at 1080p Ultra settings at 60fps easily.

Was thinking about upgrading my entry level gaming PC, currently have a GT 1030 in there, and a i3-7100 which is not that bad actually, was going to upgrade for a 1060 6gb but, probably will just go for the 1050ti. Then get a i5-7500. Let us know how it gets on, what was your reason for getting 16gb of RAM though?
