Southgate called him and said he wanted him to come back in the squad and Rooney said no, he wanted to prolong his career at Everton and retired.
It's OK. One day you'll get something right, keep trying.

If Southgate did call him to say that he was being selected, Southgate should be asked to retire for his lack of forward thought on the future progress of the England team ! He should be looking to get the younger players more involved and gaining the necessary experience to prosper in future tournaments not looking back! |  |

Who should he have called up instead? Defoe is older so we'll rule him out, and Vardy also the wrong side of 30
Kane, Rashford and Sturridge fine, and Welbeck aswell. Behind them...Tammy Abraham maybe? It's no wonder Rooney was still in consideration
