Hedgehogs. 22:45 - Sep 4 with 9736 views | jeera | Anyone here with much experience dealing with them? There's been one coming around for some weeks and it is taking food I put out. Problem is, I have a good idea of where it's coming from and it appears to be living on a site that is marked for building. Although I could maybe hognap it, I'd rather not and would like to entice it to live here away from harm's way. I am happy to buy or build a home for it but how do I get it to move in? I'm guessing they can't read so I know a welcome sign won't help - I'm not stupid. So, what then? A sign with an image of a happy hedgehog smiling or something and pointing at the new pad?

Hmm. Small garden with new hedges. Will be a couple of years before they're established. Safe-ish environment here though if I can eventually get it away from the proposed building site. Like I say, happy to build it a home. It's convincing the thing. Any hedgehog porn sites you can recommend that I can stream to the new build?

I did wonder what power, if any, these folk have. There's all sorts living on the building site to be, (Tawny owls, kestrels, and a copious amount of others but not protected species), but there are also things like these hedgehogs, bats, dormice - all protected I think? You'd think Natural England may at least have a look, but they have only offered a generic response so far to the plans.

Put mealworm (dry) and later hibernation material in and around the home and cross your fingers. I must do the same with this year's hog house birthday present.

Don't bother with hedgehog porn sites, mate, they're full of pricks.

Ah I see. Hope it's female you mean. Do all the work but leave just enough for it to think it's made an actual contribution enough to make itself at home. Gotcha.

Would you like to borrow a crested newt.....dormice should do it though I would think.

Hedgehogs. on 22:59 - Sep 4 with 5011 views | factual_blue | They really like cat food. If you can put together a pile of wood, leaves etc you might get it to move in. You can probably buy hedgehog houses. You are wrong about their literacy though. They have a highly developed literary tradition. Beatrix Potter was actually a hedgehog, as were the Brothers Grimm.

Yes Rommers, thanks. I can see that. It will replicate exactly the hedgehog I have in the way that is also bright blue, runs at ridiculous speeds along the top of the neighbouring wall, before leaping and bouncing off the bird feeder when visiting me each night, in search of food. Amazed I hadn't thought of that.

It is cat food it's been taking. Apparently 8 out of 10 hedgehogs...

Ah, I see your approach - Lucan was after hedgehog rescue but you need habitat protection. Difficult in the current climate, the developers have almost everyone behind them these days. Your local Wildlife Trust might be a better bet than Natural England. Dormice would definitely be a protected species.

DO NOT give them fish based cat food....also handling can induce toxic shock so don't do it unless totally necessary. This lot are very good..... https://suffolkprickles.wordpress.com/

I wasn't sure if you had thought of it and I was stating the obvious or not. So I hedged my bets..

I know about the meat only based cat food. Ta though. But to suggest I can't handle it is ridiculous. The hog can't open the packet itself can it? [Post edited 4 Sep 2017 23:08]

The Suffolk Wildlife Trust actually has a dedicated hedgehog officer. Details, including stuff about habitats and an email contact here: http://www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/hedgehogs-action

Can also happen with roses and be fatal. Rigger gloves at the very least, Woodsmen's gauntlets even better.

There are many things I thought I'd never read on here, but slowly but surely they get ticked off.
