He attempted suicide in his twenties whilst still playing, and again in 2014 (when he stepped in front of a truck). He speaks amazingly well about his experiences and has helped players I've worked with when they've been in crisis.
I genuinely hope he's OK.

He's an intelligent man, I'm sure his IQ is 150+. Just shows you what a tough mental battle depression is and the complexity of it.

It really does.
I've heard him talk about how his mind can lead him to places where it just feels logical to die. Not because it's easy but because the thoughts he has overwhelmingly convince him that everyone would be better off with him gone. It's not what he believes most of the time but when those thoughts come, they seem like an absolute truth.
There's no point in jumping to conclusions and I hope he's just taken some time out somewhere.
He has been crying out for help for years. Experts need to study his brain as this is clearly genetic to try and help in the future. At some stage this can only finish one way. Poor lad.

I've heard him talk on the radio and it's been a real revelation. Someone who really gets it, who has been there and can talk articulately about it. I played my girlfriend one of his interviews once because he summed up what I was feeling and my thought processes whilst in the grip of the Black Dog much better than I ever could. I hope he's OK.

It's so good to hear that he's been found.
You mention the Black Dog - here is a film I often use in training. I think it's a really good way of explaining the experience of depression.
