Think you have to go further back than that, but thought similar a couple of weeks back listening to Michael Hesletine being eminently sensible on Andrew Marr (or similar). If the UK was a football club we would ask Ken Clark and Michael Hesletine to step in as caretaker managers until we could find someone suitable. See also Alan Johnson.....and to a lesser extent Paddy Pantsdown.

Ken Clarke certainly. The absence of sane voices like his shows the state that the Conservatives and indeed UK politics has gotten itself into. Currently, government policy and the UK's future is being decided by careerists looking to mimic the views of people beyond the centre right. People whose isolationist opinions stem from an unwillingness and/or inability to understand the modern world.

I see her as a bit of a Sybil Fawlty at home. 'If it isn't done by the time I get home, Philip, you know what will happen' 'You'll have to sew them back on first'

I believe she has always been on the leave side which is why the brexiteers allowed her to become PM. Until the sensible side of the tory party really take on the RW this will get worse.

All Archers posts come down to two things. He wants more rent money off the government, and he wants to be able to live in France to avoid tax on it.

When you say 'the modern World' I take it you mean acceptance of the fact the EU is run by gangsters who won't let anyone trade who doesn't do what they're told and pay the protection money?

No, I mean people who can't see the modern world. But instead have a fantasy like yours with zero compelling evidence to back it up. Gangsters asking for protection money!!?? It's a trading bloc FFS, which like any trading bloc or nation tries to protect its own interests and economic health through the right sort of imports, exports and associated costs.

The world we live in, warts and all. Not some nostalgic nonsense that blinds us to real problems and real improvements.

Why didn't the Liberals stop the referendum in the first place when they had the chance if the felt so strongly about it?

Cause they were wiped out when Cameron called the referendum in 2015....
