I've just spent an hour with a guy trying to sell me stuff and all I could do was look at the thin strands of hair scraped back in a tiny pony tail. Surely his friends and family need to tell him? Anyone on here sporting the same look?

*only a few grey hairs-themed high five*
I have loads of grey including the ones up my nose. I like to think it lends me an air of distinction but it probably makes me look 10 years older than I actually am.

Despite being hairy for a fair bit of my life (although it doesn't get much below the collar nowadays - not too much grey though) pony tails on men always used to irk me. Then my son started sporting the look, I'll defend them to the death now. He isn't going bald yet, but if that does start I'll tell him it is the pony tail that's doing it...
When I was in my late teens the slang for hairies moved from 'hippies' to 'hairies' to 'freaks' to 'heads', just about a different name every year. Anyway, a mate from the Shotley Peninsula went home and told his old boy Dad that he was a head now. 'Ohhh', said the Dad 'What's happened to the rest of yer?'.
I'm 25 and I shave my head with clippers without a guard. Never had any problems as a result and most people who I meet think it suits me (it probably helps that I'm 6'3 and in decent shape from having a healthy lifestyle). Getting used to it is not easy, I admit, but it's no where near as big a deal as you think it is. If you appear confident then it's literally no issue.
On topic - there was someone in my office today with the exact look you described, although the pony tail itself was only an inch or two long.
