Rome Recommendations 17:12 - Nov 2 with 3892 viewsyorkshireblue

Thinking of booking a long weekend there with Mrs YorkshireBlue in February.

Any recommendations of areas/hotels to stay?

Anything beyond the usual tourist traps worth visiting while we're there?

Just do as the Romans do, and you should be fine.

The Baths of Caracalla are good, further down from the Colosseum and far less busy, can do it afterwards:

The evening food tour was superb, went to about 8 places trying lovely food - all food and drinks included - there are a few to choose from I am sure. Will try and dig out the one we did.

Long weekend there years ago (prob 15+) with Mrs SWGF.

We stayed here: http://www.albergosantachiara.com/?lang=en

Right behind the Pantheon so very central and everywhere was very walkable. Hotel was pleasant enough but worth checking reviews as I stayed early 2000s, I reckon.

Incredible, amazing, breathtaking place.

You'll have an amazing time.

Pizza Hut in Italy is like nothing you've ever had elsewhere.

Tour the Flavian amphitheatre at night is my recommendation. Did a sunset walking tour finishing there and it was superb.

Eat as much gelato as you can. Enjoy all the history everywhere. I thought the catacombs were worth a visit because they're so odd. Borghese park looking over the city is nice but not sure if weather curtails that a little?

Generally speaking the touristy sights are all there for enjoying and worth it. Also pop into churches if you want to see where half the world's gold is. Stuck in the walls and ceilings of your local neighbourhood Roman chapel it seems.

Bit high up the boot for that stereotype surely?

I love Rome, absolutely amazing place. I gained about a stone on honeymoon there eating far too much pizza, pasta and gelato! We stayed on Via Giulia which was pretty quiet but still really central - didn't need to use public transport the whole time we were there

Whatever you do, do as much of it on foot as you can.

One of my favourite places. Great food, stuff to see everywhere......just wander and enjoy.

Walk everywhere and admire the view. One of my favourite cities.

Last time I visited, we stayed at the radisson blu next to the central train station. Super hotel with a rooftop pool and bar plus there's some remnants of an historic building cordoned off in the lobby area. Fascinating.

Tip: don't eat in restaurants on the main tourist routes. Have a wander down side streets and you'll find much cheaper and better. Common sense, yes but it's so true in Rome.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Try a coffee at Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè. The service is quite rude and you have to pay double if you actually want to sit down to enjoy your coffee but it's the most intense and unique espresso you'll ever have anywhere.
