Anyone moaning about having to pay for a TV licence if they're watching this series can do one as far as I'm concerned. 4 (four!) years in the making - and not just "pretty TV" - 12 new science papers written as a result of it. But anyone else laugh at the producer, in amongst all that ultra hi-tech 21stC technology of the submersible, resorting to the ultra low-tech method of having to dip her finger into the puddle on the floor & taste it in order to confirm it was the submersible leaking?! On a more serious note, it's doing a wonderful job in raising awareness of environmental issues. I was simultaneously gasping w. amazement, smiling with joy, & weeping that we're wrecking our wondrous 'blue dot'.

You both had it coming tbf. But, yep, as you say in your other post, why would you begrudge the BBC funds? Whilst they still deliver... Drama, nature, news stations et al, so informative.

I didn't, tbf! Anyway, let's let our lovely Blue Planet set the standard in how to live in harmony, if only we looked at the bigger picture - promotion for ITFC! Planet Blue should be doing something to get 'collateral positives' - spin-offs from the series, if they're not already, methinks.

It's a fantastic programme, no one makes them better than the BBC. Isn't Obama a major fan, I would imagine this series along with the previous ones will sold pretty much worldwide.

Like so many of the best BBC docus, in collaboration with the OU - their joint productions on these over the years, on all sorts of subjects, are just outstanding, and make a huge contribution to BBC4. I really would happily pay my TV licence fee to watch those alone, never mind all the sport, drama (Line of Duty!) etc. you also get! The OU academics involved in the making - http://www.open.edu/blue-planet-II/Blue-Planet-II-OpenLearn-Open-University.html

Absolutely, and people tend to forget all this when complaining about licence fees. Detectorists has been mentioned again today, but also the likes of Taboo and Peaky Blinders and Cuckoo etc have all have all involved big name stars and must cost a fortune to produce. And they're produced well. Maybe there is a fair claim for them to continue to be available thereafter, but that aside.

Agree with everything you say...except for the tv licence comment. This is an outstanding series and it's pleasing to see what it has generated. However, the BBC has regularly fallen short in so many other areas that an amazing series hosted by David Attenborough does not make up for the lack of entertainment across so many other genres. Blue Planet is about the only thing I watch on the BBC nowadays. Sherlock (one of it's few quality dramas) manages to get only 3 episodes every two years and the news and sport has been so dumbed down or lost to other channels that there is little to make me turn to the BBC channels. BBC used to lead the way, now it's just an also ran. Really outdated and out-thought.
