Never had a Noah 10:46 - Nov 17 with 6686 views | GeoffSentence | On the first names theme, Noah was the 6th most common first name in registered in England in 2016, but we've never had a Noah play for us. Maybe in 17 or 18 years time we will see a flood of them. Similarly Muhammad was the 8th most popular name registered for new borns in England last year and we haven't had one of those play for us yet either.

I don't blame him, it happens a Lot. AdminTWTD has been inundated with complaints. Any message board worth its salt should be focusing on football on the Eve of a big game.

There's already a similar thread. I don't see why these have to come in pairs.

Do the ONS state that? Although that's been true for a number of years I've never seen them state it.

Altho that is largely because a reasonably-sized bloc (around 5%) of society has a marked disposition towards one particular name. Something which is not true for any other group (e.g. Jesus is not a predominant name among UK Christians). Thus, while being a fairly small constituency, Muslims are able to "outvote" the more disparate name choices of everybody else.

Why isn't Jesus used by UK Christians? It is by Christians in other countries.

They are ten a penny in Spain but in the UK it would look like you were taking the piss if you named your baby Jesus. What I find odd with Islam is that you can name your sprogs after the Prophet but you can draw a picture of him. [Post edited 17 Nov 2017 12:17]

Never been part of the tradition. Mostly saints' or monarchs' names historically, plus names passed down in families. Before that usually went on meaning (e.g. Æþelflaeđ - Alfred the Great's daughter - from Æþel "noble" and flaeđ "beauty"). Probably considered too presumptuous, blasphemous, even. Especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, from whence a lot of modern naming patterns originated.

The derivation of the no pictures tradition is that Mohammed was only human, thus to make images of him carries too much risk of idolisation, too close to paganism and their statues of gods. There was a similar struggle going on in the Byzantine Christian church at around the same period (iconoclasm). Much of early islamic art was abstract, geometric and calligraphic, rather than figurative, as a result.

No. Somebody took the data provided by the ONS and added up all variations of the name. The same with Shaun and Sean but it didn't make much difference to that name.
