Jehovah's Witnesses sexual abuse 08:15 - Nov 20 with 7358 viewssolemio

If there is anyone surprised that these appalling people told victims to keep quiet so that the name of Jehovah was not besmirched you must be living in a fools' paradise. (BBC News Front Page)

Mind you, some Christian denominations are very little better than the Witnesses in this regard. JWs are not Christians as they do not believe Jesus Christ was God.

You are guilty of religious discrimination and a hate crime.

You have condemned all members of a religion for the actions of a few.

Indeed i was going to say the same, with a bit of Rotherham added in for good measure.

Wow.

PS I think a lot of religions would agree that Jesus wasn't God.

Yes, but not Christian religions. Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity.

I'm not sure the "what about muslims" angle is necessary here.

The OP is offensive without needing to make comparisons.

One of the points of my post was that I feared there would be very little notice taken of this news compared with similar news concerning Muslims.

I don't hate Jehovah's Witnesses (I don't hate whole groups of people), but in my working life I saw the really bad effect that parents of that faith had on their children, 90% of whom were really unpleasant to other children.

I am not normally a prejudiced person, and I can think of no other group about whom I would have made such a statement. I try to judge folk as individuals not as members of any sort of group. I was probably ill-advised to make the post I did, and it was a prejudiced post, but I still feel it. Other religious denominations are not institutionally exclusive in the sense that they condemn non-believers in the way that JWs appear to me to do.

I shall quite understand if Admin do delete this thread.

I know a number of JW's and they are, without exception, kind hearted and pleasant people.

I don't get their, or any other, faith but each to their own.

I am genuinely pleased to hear that your experience is better than mine.
I am quite prepared to believe that I have been unlucky (9 out of 11).

Despite the comments folk have made, and despite the fact that my op gave the wrong impression, I would deprecate anyone who condemned all members of a group for the actions of a few.

It is the official reaction of the senior JWs who didn't want the name of Jehovah besmirched that I would wish to condemn - ditto BBC in the cases of Savile, Stuart Hall and quite a lot of others.

Blinded by bigotry.

There are wronguns in all walks of life and their organisations, be it work or otherwise, have often covered up their actions to protect reputations.

Given that I totally agree with every word of your second paragraph I'm not quite sure why I need its truth over-emphasised to me.

I think it's a fair compassion because we often hear or see instances where the majority of decent British Muslims are pilloried for the actions of a very small minority who carry out acts in the name of their religion.

By using a religion where the majority are often condemned for the actions of the few I thought it might help the op see how his post was wrong.

Going to stick my neck out and say that whilst I fully appreciate you shouldn't have posted this, for all the reasons that others have said (stigmatising/stereotyping, labelling a group etc) - I can kinda understand where you're coming from.

I think many people have an instant reaction to Jehovahs Witnesses, as a result of being intrusively and inconveniently door-stepped by them, something which no other group of people in the UK does on behalf of their religion, as far as I'm aware. Such intrusiveness sets up negative views in the minds of many (including myself) to them as a group. Sorry, but that's a human reaction, tho of course it may well be overturned by individual JWs we come across in future who are *not* evangelising.

We do carry our experiences and memories through with us, they help form our reactions to people in later life, however unfairly. Personally I can never forget one other student in my year at college for social work training, who related his experiences of being brought up in an orphanage/school run by Jesuits. He was beaten and abused by them almost every day he was there, his hatred of them was palpable, and over 40 years later, I can still remember his face and his body language as he told us all that.

Poll: Why can't/don't we protest like the French do? 🤔
