The Ashes on BT Sport 18:08 - Nov 21 with 21971 viewssparks

What a crock.

No way I can watch any of it without a BT Broadband subscription. Ridiculous. They are well on the way to destroying the support base, especially amongst younger people, for cricket, for short term financial gain.

At least when stuff is on Sky I can use the Now TV service and pay for the bits and pieces Im interested in as and when.

I remember when the second half of a league game which I think involved Blackpool was shown live on a Friday night(I think).
It must have been in the very early 1970's and the novelty value caused great excitement.

In a way it was nice when the only live club football on TV was the F.A. Cup Final and European Finals.

Live Test cricket on the BBC goes back at least until the early 1960's.

This has got nothing to do with who has got the TV rights for The Ashes but it certainly was a different world.

It was Blackpool v Bolton in September 1960. The game kicked off at 6:50pm & they only showed the 2nd half so as to allow fans to get home from other games to watch (how times have changed).
Arsenal were due to be on live the following week, but they withdrew permission & spurs did the same the following week so ITV abandoned the project.
Burnley chairman Bob Lord refused Match of the Day cameras to show highlights of any games from Turf Moor in the 1960s.

That long ago!

I remember watching it but did not realise that I was only 9 at the time, that explains why it was such a novelty.
I know the first F.A. Cup Final that I saw on TV was 1958, which I saw on a friends TV because we did not have one-I think we got one about that time though.

Yes, odd strategy really as if it were on Sky I would watch a few hours at the weekend and highlights. There is one day-night Test but I doubt it's enough to persuade people to sign up for BT sport.

It's a totally different matter with a summer series, a couple of hours each evening and full days at the weekend - which is why I signed up to Sky in the end.

BT are paying Cricket Australia £80m over 5 years for the rights to all their home internationals (which obviously includes the Ashes plus ODIs etc) & the Big Bash. Hard to see any of this attracting much of an audience in the UK so not hard to see why Sky let it go.

The Big Bash is alright, I think over time people will begin to take BT more seriously

Sky aren't going to have it their way anymore

Fair play to BT for sticking up to Murdoch

This excellent post shows how much football has changed, and just how much the decision makers have stopped putting fans first.

Can you imagine in these modern times Sky, BT or anyone at the FA moving or altering transmission times so that fans have a chance to get home from the game they've just attended?

If one of the good TWTD folk invents a time machine, please let me travel back to September 1960 so I can watch The Mighty Blues win back-to-back titles and enjoy the game as it was intended!

BT are in a bit of a hole as their basic cash cow business is under pressure. They are trying subscription broadcasting, which requires a big initial investment, but they heaven't yet got the returns & subscriber growth has stalled. A bit of cricket isn't going to do it - maybe they try to out-bid Sky for the choice PL games in the next auction? Their current strategy of picking up the odd piece e.g. Champions' League hasn't done it so they need to go all in or fold, IMO.

The ECB destroyed the support base post-2005. Channel 4 provided a whole new fresh approach in production and commentary, the team played superbly (and had players with superstar appeal) the whole nation was behind them, and within a couple of years they sold out to sky.

But for you, and others, there may be another way...

As an EE mobile customer I received an email saying I could take 3 months free subscription to the BT app. Only usable on EE sim devices, but the law of averages suggests about a quarter of people on here could benefit from this.

Thanks but I've tried that - and I've installed file viewer plus - and I installed some bluestack thing last night and I'm going round in circles.

Looks like it's TMS for me - I presume that's on DAB.

I read that there's an early morning round up show available to all on the BT Sports website. I know it doesn't help for live viewing but a decent option still.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Useless information.

The first ball of the first test at The Ashes in OZ is one of the greatest sporting highlights ever.
