England team: Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root (capt), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Jake Ball, James Anderson.

I think we may struggle. Fingers crossed I am proved wrong.

yeah, but then you look at the Oz line up

1 Cameron Bancroft, 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Pete Handscomb, 6 Shaun Marsh, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh Hazlewood

there's only 2 decent batsmen in there.

If you're recalling shaun marsh, the cupboard really must be bare.

Both sides look poor batting bar from a couple - Cook and Root vs Warner and Smith.

Going to be a tight series where good sessions will decide test matches

Although not in the Cook/Root class, Moeen and Bairstow are more than useful, but there are three top order guys with a lot to prove.

The Aussie batsmen haven't improved since their woeful showing over here in 2015 either.

Most of ours have shown what they CAN do, but it's a case of showing some consistency.
Cook and Root are class acts, Malan, Bairstow, Ali are all decent on their day and I think we'll see Stokes by the 3rd test.

I actually think we're in a better position than people think. I may even put a wager on Stoneman top scoring for England, or at least scoring more than Cook. As for Malan, I actually think he'll be better in AUS than he was back in England (providing he has a base to build from)

Those 2 could be the surprise packages this series. Vince will do his usual flash his way to 20 before edging behind so I don't hold much hope for him contributing much, but if we don't lose cheap wickets in the first 15/20 overs then I fancy then everyone will contribute in a deep batting line up

So here's a challenge... pick a combined 11 from the 2 announced teams..

Top 4 goes without saying. Not sure at 5..malan or handscombe - haven't seen enough of handscombe to decide
Bairstow(w) and Ali at 6 & 7
starc, cummins and anderson pace..
hazlewood or lyons, dependant on pitch

So.
Cook, Warner, Root, Smith, Malan, Bairstow(w), Ali, Starc, Cummins, Anderson, Lyon/Hazlewood

If stokes was available, would have him at 5, and Lyon instead of Hazlewood.

Its a fairly even split, which suggests a pretty close series for me.

Looks like lots of non-5 day test matches coming up.

Which is sad.

I think that's a fair assessment, although we look much stronger at 6,7 and 8. That said, their bowling attack is much stronger on home soil. I can see a few innings where we're toiling at about 300-2.

In Aussie conditions I wouldn't pick Jimmy, hope to be proven horribly wrong though.
Cook
Warner
Khawaja
Root
Smith
Bairstow
Ali
Starc
Cummins
Hazelwood
Lyon (Stokes in and order rejigged when please god he gets out there)

Really hoping Stoneman can cement a top order slot, showed a lot of positive signs of late, Sir Alistair of Cook hundred tomorrow morning would be magnificent.
