I could probably score a few runs in a test match at Perth when the ball goes soft. EDIT: Just that Root dropped Khawaja FFS [Post edited 15 Dec 2017 8:26]

Khawaja looks like a wicket waiting to happen. Can't see Smith going anytime soon though.

Khawaja looks like a wicket waiting to happen, but he's up against a pretty clueless field at the moment.

When we were 360 odd for 4 I thought losing was not likely. The collapse and the quick scoring rate means they could be 100 or more in front by the end of day 3. Ooh, is the a wicket? Looks high. OUT! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Cricket is very much an individual sport played as a team in fairness.

Over these two and a bit tests it has shown that the Aussies have a better bowling attack than our boys and that ultimately will be the difference.

And Smith (as much as it pains me to say it)...the blokes a phenom. Averages 62 (73 over the past 4 years)

Yes he is a quality player, but Smith isn't having to face Starc, Cummins, Lyon and Hazelwood. I do think regarding the batting line ups there isn't much between them, but the bowling their is a huge chasm. The Aussies look like they can take 20 wickets due to their variety, we simply don't look capable of bowling them out twice - our bowlers all bowl at a similar speed and are all right handed, just too similar. Problem is who is out there who we can change them for? Our options are very limited, which is very depressing. [Post edited 15 Dec 2017 13:24]

The Ashes 2017/2018 Thread on 07:58 - Dec 15 by Herbivore | Which is odd really as our tail have dug us out of some situations over the years. I think it shows what that extra 5mph is worth on quick wickets, they can't deal with the raw pace. |
Did you hear the very interesting interval talk (think it was lunch? my times are all mixed up) about how the Aussies are coaching to put an extra 5mph on their fast bowlers? Worth hearing on catchup if not. IIrc, techniques such as slamming their trunks down into ground harder & using arms in more of a flicky slingshot action on delivery - not to mention faster run-ups!

We seem capable of a fatal collapse at any time I fully expected us to balls it up from 300 - 4 and sure enough we've gone and lost 6 wickets for 34 runs You don't win many test matches with batting like that I expect the Aussies to get a lead of about 150 before finding us at some like 100 - 5 at the close of play this morning [Post edited 15 Dec 2017 23:43]

Yep, two final opportunities - early tomorrow and new ball. Broad needs to have one of his magic spells! Really worried I’m going to wake up to Smith on 200 odd and ashes more or less gone. Fingers crossed for a great day of sport tomorrow!

Hello Rommy. Smith sitting on 98. Looks so untroubled. This could be the longest day of the tour.

Evening Gainsborough. Hope you're well. 💯 up for Smith. A fantastic century from a fantastic batsman. Unlike with Root, the captaincy has made Smith even better than what he was. Yes this could be a tough day to watch. Though I think I've found a decent vetting angle on the Aussies scoring over a certain run rate in blocks of 15 overs. They're clearly going to continue at more than 3 an over. So at least I should make a bit of cash out the misery that will be Australian boundaries. I predict a draw. As I said back on day 1 of the test match.

Morning. Smith is absolute class - when he gets in, he just doesn't look movable. He's got his hundred and it would almost bed a surprise if it's not a double. I think you're right about this being a long one...

I suspect it's more likely to be a draw should the two first innings scores be in that 400 region. I think if Australia get a 150-200 lead, we could very easily crumble to a pathetic innings defeat given how momentum swings.

I predict 475 for the Aussies and then having a bowl at us tonight. For the Aussies to win with the time remaining after that, that would probably require them getting us out for less than 250 and then chasing down 200 in the last two days. Very doable. Our second innings first four batsman need to stay in until lunch time on day four at the very very least. I think. I love test cricket. It's so much better than the shirt formats.

It's quite clear that the differences in this series are a) Smith b) Pace c) A spinner who can spin the ball Our attack are trying wilfully but they look so unthreatening out there. No doubt, we'll have whoever is touring here in May (Pakistan I believe) 70-6 at lunch at Chester-le-Street and this tour will be forgotten. We absolutely must start encouraging some young bowlers to bowl fast as outside the UK and possibly NZ, we are just completely nullified. Do English players still play in other countries in the off season? They certainly used to but I suppose several of them now play the pyjama stuff instead for the bucks.
